Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in ahorticulture context.
People credited with this unit standard are able todemonstrate understanding of the features of plant families in horticulture; and identify plants in horticulture by family characteristics, botanical description, and plant classification keys.

Explanatory notes
Definition
In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be evidence of a learner’s thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learner’s understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate understanding of the features of plant families in horticulture.
Rangeat least 10 of the following families – Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Myrtaceae, Proteaceae, Lamiaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Orchidaceae, Poaceae, Ranunculaceae, Ericacae, Amaryllidaceae, Cupressaceae, Brassicaceae, Taxadiaceae, Fogaceae, Solanaceae, Pinaceae, Liliaceae, Magnoliaceae.
Evidence requirements
1.1Describe the vegetative characteristics for each of the family.
Rangeleaf shapes, leaf arrangements, root characteristics, shoot characteristics.
1.2Describe flower and fruit characteristics for each of the family.
Rangeflower structures, inflorescence structures, floral formulas, fruit structures.
Outcome 2
Identify plants in horticulture by family characteristics, botanical description, and plant classification keys.
Rangeat least one flowering plant, and one NZ native plant family.
Evidence requirements
2.1Identify plants in horticulturein terms of plant family characteristics.
