Purpose / This unit standard is for people for whom English is an additional language.
People credited with this unit standard are able to participate in basic everyday spoken transactions (EL).

Guidance Information

1English Language (EL)refers to the acquisition of English as an additional language.

2This unit standard may contribute to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 1) [Ref: 1880]. It is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference high A1 – low A2.

3All assessment activities must be conducted in English, which must not be the candidate’s first language.

4Assessment must be conducted in a supportive and familiar environment, in which the interlocutor may occasionally repeat or rephrase questions, and affective barriers are minimised. Candidates may request assistance to understand the requirements of the assessment tasks.

5The assessor must be satisfied that the candidate can independently demonstrate competence against the unit standard.

6Two candidates may be assessed simultaneously, but each candidate must fulfil the requirements of the unit standard independently.

7It is recommended that:

ithe outcomes are assessed in authentic or simulated situations, relevant to the context of the candidate, as part of an integrated unit of work;

iiassessment be conducted in conjunction with assessment against other English Language unit standards at this level.

8Responses may contain phonological or linguistic inaccuracies, but errors must not interfere with meaning. Candidate’s speech may be hesitant with pauses, single words or short phrases, and may follow learnt formulas.

Everyday transactions refer to requests and enquiries.

Requests refer to asking for assistance or services.

Enquiriesrefer to asking for information.

Common courtesies refer to interactions and behaviour that is respectful of others.

Outcomes and Performance criteria

Outcome 1

Participate in basic everyday spoken transactions (EL).

Rangesix spoken transactions assessed on separate occasions, each in a different context, for a different purpose;

each transaction must be a minimum of six turns by the candidate.

1.1Conventions of basic everyday spoken transactionsare used in a manner appropriate to context and participants.

Rangeeye contact is established;

conventions may include but are not limited to – greetings, leave taking, common courtesies.

1.2Basic enquiries and requests are made in a manner appropriate to the purpose, context, topic, and relationship between participants.

Rangeminimum of three enquiriesand three requests, over six spoken transactions;

basic enquiries and requests may include but are not limited to – asking for and/or giving the time, transactions involving money.
