NAFSA PRE-MEETING WORKSHOPS –

The three sessions below presented by NAFSA Trainer Corp members. They are day-long (8 hour) workshopsthat will be offered on Thursday, July 28, 2011. Please check if you are interested in attending one of these workshops. There is an additional fee of $175 per workshop. Workshops could be cancelled in a timely manner if there is low interest in attending.

____F-1 Student Advising for Beginners Workshop, July 28, 2011____$175

Target audience of F-1 student advisers with less than one year experience; others who are interested in understanding the fundamentals of the DSO role. This introductory workshop provides participants with hands-on opportunities to learn how to handle the most common requests made of new Designated School Officials (DSO). Participants will develop skills to help them interpret the common requests F-1 students have during the course of their program, research the regulations and other resources that help inform and define the work of the DSO, and determine the best course of action in each case. The workshop will apply these skills to requests such as: issuing I-20s, maintaining status, employment, practical training, travel and reentry, and program extensions.

____F-1 Student Advising: Intermediate Workshop, July 28, 2011____$175
Target audience is Designated School Officials with at least 15 months experience, who have participated in the F-1 Student Advising for Beginners Workshop, or have received training equivalent to F-1 Student Advising for Beginners. This intermediate level workshop is designed for Designated School Officials who understand the processes of F-1 student advising and are ready to tackle some of the more complexsituations. Participants will discuss a range of case studies on the topics of DSO Responsibilities, Maintenance of Status, Travel, Transfers, Employment, Change of Status, and Reinstatement. By addressing these case studies, participants will learn how to advise students when regulations and guidance do not give a clear answer to their situation. If you are new to the field, in order to receive the maximum benefit from this training, it is recommended that you allow for some time to apply the skills introduced in the F-1 Student Advising for Beginners Workshop before you attend the Intermediate level workshop.

____Health and Safety in Education Abroad, , July 28, 2011____$175

Target audience is Education Abroad professionals and others interested in health and safety. The health, safety, and responsible personal behavior of education abroad participants have always been paramount to education abroad professionals. Using the document "Responsible Study Abroad: Good Practices for Health and Safety," participants will learn to apply recognized standards of good practice in health and safety to their institutions or organizations education abroad programs. Participants will gain competencies needed to identify, research, and assess health and safety risks, and communicate these to key constituents. Participants also will create a framework for emergency response, communication, and crisis management.

CANCELLATIONS, LATE REGISTRATIONS AND REFUNDS:

NAFSA will send materials for Workshop participants out by July 15. If you are interested in participating in one of the workshops offered on Thursday, July 28 please register prior to July 15. Cancellation notification must be received prior to July 22 for a refund. No-shows will not be refunded. If registration and payment cannot be postmarked by July 22 please submit the late/on-site registration fee. If you are not a Conference Presenter, payment is required to attend.
