Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in the canvas fabrication and allied industries. People credited with this unit standard are able to: seam the work for canvas fabrication; perform finishing on the work for canvas fabrication; demonstrate knowledge of fasteners and fittings for canvas fabrication; and select and fit fasteners and fittings for canvas fabrication.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Seam the work for canvas fabrication.

Evidence requirements

1.1Seam type is selected to client specification and company policy.

Rangeplain single seam, top sewn seam, double top sewn seam, run and fell seam, folded overlap seam.

1.2Sewing machine is selected and prepared to produce specified seam according to machine manufacturer’s specifications and company policy.

1.3Reinforcements are attached according to client specification and company policy.

1.4Work is positioned and joined to line at workplace required speed, using stitch length for the material being sewn and the strength of seam required.

1.5Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task.

Outcome 2

Perform finishing on the work for canvas fabrication.

Evidence requirements

2.1Hemming is carried out to client specification and company policy.

Rangesingle hem on selvedge edge, double turned hem.

2.2Bias binding is sewn according to company policy.

2.3Ropes are attached as specified by client and according to company policy.

2.4Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task.

Rangepersonal safety; safety of other people; workshop safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate knowledge of fasteners and fittings for canvas fabrication.

Evidence requirements

3.1Type and size identify fasteners and fittings are identified according to manufacturer’s specifications.

Rangeeyelets, domes, turnbuckles, rivets, studs, hooks, shock cord fastenings, rope end and splice clips, hook and loop, stayput, lift the dot, buckles, zippers, sister clips, overcentre buckles, cam buckles, rave hooks, grommets, rings, press rings.

3.2Applications for the fasteners and fittings are described according to manufacturer’s specifications.

3.3Methods for attaching the fasteners and fittings are described according to manufacturer’s specifications.

Outcome 4

Select and fit fasteners and fittings for canvas fabrication.

Evidence requirements

4.1Fasteners and fittings are selected to job specification requirement.

4.2Fasteners and fittings are attached to the product at the workplace required speed in positions dictated by the job specification requirements, using correct machines and tools.

4.3Attachment of fasteners and fittings conform to workplace procedures.

4.4Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task.
