Course Description:
This is a course designed to help you reflect on the experience of serving your community and to help you understand ways in which particular societal issues are addressed.
Purpose:
To help you, the student …
… connectwith other people who may be different from you
… serve a need within the community, and
… learn, mostly through experience, about yourself and the overall community – its history, culture, and needs.
Course Objectives:
Upon the successful completion of this class, you will have done the following:
1. Defined your own motivations for service/civic engagement.
2. Identified societal issues that are important to you.
3. Found an agency that addresses those issues.
4. Volunteered 24 hours per week for 10 weeks at that agency.
5. Learned about the agency and how it operates.
6. Described the rewards and challenges of volunteering.
7. Identified ways of addressing the societal need beyond the work the agency does and the student's involvement with the agency.

Portfolio:
The student will prepare a portfolio of the volunteer experience. See Portfolio Description in packet
Attendance Policy:
Unexcused absences will result in a lower “quality of participation score” (see below), at the discretion of the instructor.
Course Grading:
Portfolio - 75 pts.
Quality of Participation - 25 pts.

Starting September 15 and going until the end of the semester, you will be expected to volunteer 2-4 hours per week for a total of at least 10 weeks. (contingent upon the nature of the service)
