10 Easy Steps to Setting up a Lunch & Learn

10 Easy Steps to setting up a Lunch & Learn:

  1. When: Choose day, end of week, Wednesday or Thursday works well, lunchtime. 1 hour (date may depend on guest speaker availability).
  1. Where:
  2. book a free room if possible to accommodate expected numbers.
  3. allow for usage of laptop and projector.
  1. What to learn, Why: Advertise purpose of L&L to members see examples below.
  1. Who:
  2. email local members (acquire list from PIPSC if necessary).
  3. book speakers via your branch President- have him/her contact National Executive members or other interested parties. Confirm who will provide laptop/projector.
  1. How/Food:
  2. book pizza or other lunch @ $10+ish/person, including pop, juice, dessert etc.
  3. place order at least one day before with the restaurant to ensure order time. Confirm.
  4. For us, vegetarian was not too popular! Know your crowd, or ask ahead of time.
  5. Arrange for food to arrive 10 minutes before meeting starts, so speakers can spend more time talking.
  6. Pay for it and seek reimbursement or else ask for advance from branch treasurer.
  1. Setup room at least 15 minutes before speakers arrive. Introduce and thank speakers, members for attending- important to garner spirit! Tidy up room when done.
  1. Optional ideas depending on time, $, energy!
  2. We had tiny bag of suckers, candy, chocolate, rockets and a tag with the “Better Together Campaign” website for members to take away with them. Remind them of the event and lead them to the site.
  3. Swag giveaway (ask guest speakers if they have any freebees).
  1. Send thank you email to members for attending day following at latest, with any follow-up/parking lot information from the talk and or weblinks discussed, to touch base and so they have your name on their radar, should they want to get more involved or have issues they want to discuss with you personally.
  1. Retain and Scan receipts and attendance, email to your local branch treasurer for quick reimbursement who will seek funds from PIPSC office if necessary.
  1. Record on Central NOC-ROC activity Centre: attendance, cost and overall reception by members.

As you’re aware, outsourcing CS jobs has been identified as a largeconcern by Stan Buday, in a letter Gary Corbet (then President ofPIPSC). Read it here:

The time ahead is so important. Collectively we need to careintenselyabout our future employment here, we have to be passionate enough tospeak out about our ideas and what we think of the plans to outsource.

Do not let your voice be unheard… Collectively we can be strong, tovoice our concerns about the current government developments, budgetandproposals.

Having said that… actively listening to the latest updates from Deniseand Robert, being informed and determined and sharing them with yourcolleagues is critical too too!
