Frequently Asked Questions - Observers
Who is eligible?This opportunity is available to US or international physicians, (MD/DO) who wish to expand their knowledge of pediatric medicine. As a visiting physician in this program, a participant cannot provide clinical treatment due to U.S. laws regarding physician licensure.
Is there a fee? We do not charge any tuition to observership participants and we are unable to provide any type of financial assistance for travel, accommodations, or any other expenses related to relocation to the United States. This observership has no salary support. Obtaining the correct visa, making travel arrangements, and finding accommodations are the participant's responsibility.
Does MCH provide housing accommodations? No, Miami Children's Hospital does not provide housing for observers. Please obtain housing prior to acceptance to our program.
What is the difference between a Domestic Observer, International Observer & International Scholar?
Domestic Observer –Physicians who hold a medical license in the United States.
International Observer – Physicians who hold a medical license in their country.
International Scholar – Physicians who come to MCH to do research or teach in a non-tenured position for a temporary period of time.
How do I apply for an observership at MCH? In order for you to be an observer at Miami Children's you have to complete an application and submitthe required documents for credentialing. All this information is available at Click on Doctors and Caregivers, click on For Students and Observers, then Observers; download the application form and the credential checklist. Is there a deadline for the application? There is no deadline for applications, but we request that submit your application six weeks prior to the date(s) you are requesting.
How long after I submit my application will I receive confirmation of approval or denial of my application? Please allow 6-8 weeks for confirmation of approval or denial of your application.
What are the areas of rotation that I may apply for? Participation in an observership is contingent on our faculty’s availability.

What exactly is the Statement of Intent? The statement of intent is a letter stating your goals and how you will use what you will learn as an observer at MCH. The statement of intent and purpose of your visit can both be addressed in the same letter.
How many recommendation letters should I submit and who should they be from? You should submit 2 recommendation letters and they should be from past employers, dean of your medical school or colleagues in the medical field.
What is the minimum score requirement for the USMLE Step 1 or USMLE Step 2? There is no minimum score requirement.
For the Proof of Health Insurance, does the Assist Card works? You may purchase health insurance of your choice.
Do I need the TOEFL in order to apply? Yes, Joint Commission requires documentation of English proficiency. The orientation and questions are in English. TheTOEFL, the Oxford exam, or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)isdocumentation of English Proficiency. Private tutors are not.
Does your office have my file from last year since the required documents on the checklist should be there? Each request requires a new application. We do not keep applications beyond completion of a rotation.
