POSITION CONTEXT

UWA SPORTS MISSION STATEMENT
To provide high quality sport and recreation opportunities and experiences at UWA through membership and participation.
AIMS
To provide and manage sport, fitness and recreation programs, services and facilities required to meet the needs of the University community.
To promote amateur sporting and physical recreation amongst members as an essential feature of University life; and
For that purpose, to encourage and assist in the formation amongst members of sporting and physical recreation clubs and to support and coordinate the activities of clubs so formed.

BUSINESS UNIT OBJECTIVES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • To promote a positive healthy lifestyle and personal wellbeing by providing quality recreation and fitness training facilities, equipment, programs and services utilising professional, educated staff.
  • To maintain strong relationships with all major users of the UWA facilities managed by the Association and other relevant stakeholders.
  • To be measured by participation, enrolment and usage numbers, financial performance, and customer perception of quality of services and other key performance indicators identified in the Operational Priority Plan.

POSITION OBJECTIVES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

POSITION OBJECTIVE:
  • To provide high quality customer service and deliver fitness and recreation programs opportunities and experiences at UWA through fitness with focus on programs and class delivery.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • To coordinate a range of fitness and recreation programs and classes which meet key performance indicators identified in the Operational Priorities Plan.
  • To deliver and maintain the viability of the fitness and recreation program and to regularly review these programs and to recommend improvements where identified.
  • To provide opportunities for leadership and instructor development (with a focus on UWA Students) to deliver these programs and classes.
  • To contribute to the UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre Team and across the Association.
  • To meet Occupational Safety & Health and other compliance requirements.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND OUTCOMES

Key Accountabilities
Programs – 40%
  • To plan, develop and maintain a quality fitness program and class timetable to best satisfy current members and attract new members.
  • To plan, develop and deliver fitness and recreation programs and courses in consultation with other staff members.
  • To plan, develop and deliver targeted fitness and recreation programs for UWA Residential Colleges in consultation with the stakeholders affected.
  • To coordinate the recruitment, appointment, training and management of casual staff, volunteers, officials and instructors to deliver fitness and recreation programs.
  • To lead and instruct some fitness programs and classes with relevant qualifications maintained and updated.
  • To develop initiatives to improve the financial capacity and viability of the fitness and recreation program.
  • To establish budgets including all income generation, cost of sales and budget expenditure associated with the delivery of fitness and recreation programs.
  • To liaise with Marketing to promote fitness and recreation programs and classes.
Recreation and Fitness Centre – 40%
  • To assist with the delivery of front line customer service as a fitness trainer.
  • To supervise gym training areas and fitness classes as required, including but not limited to the Multi-Purpose Room, Cycle Room and Circuit Room.
  • To contribute to the recruitment and retention of fitness membership.
  • To actively promote the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre through external events like the UWA Open Day or as directed.
  • To action the marketing direction of the Recreation and Fitness Centre as required.
  • To assist in the coordination of the maintenance and cleaning of all Recreation and Fitness Centre equipment as per centre management requirements.
  • To assist with the coordination and supervision of fitness instructors and /or fitness centre
Other Association – 10%
  • To be an integral part of UWA Sport and Recreation Association team.
  • To assist in the delivery of key Association events.
  • Other duties as required by the Executive of the Association.
Occupational Safety & Health and compliance– 10%
  • To comply with the University’s, UWA Sport and Recreation Association’s and other regulatory bodies’ policies and procedures.
  • To take reasonable care to ensure personal health and safety in the workplace.

Key Performance Indicators
  • To provide the Fitness and Health Manager with the necessary assistance needed to meet the Health and Fitness specific Key Performance Indicators outlined within the Operational Priorities Plan and Student Services and Amenities Fee Service Level Agreement.
  • To ensure employment and engagement of casual staff, volunteers, officials and instructors is conducted in line with the Associations policies and procedures while the qualifications levels are met.
  • To increase student employment and volunteerism.
  • To recommend purchases and works within the annual budget expenditure for the business unit.
  • To maintain, with an approved analytical approach, a structured fitness timetable.
  • To increase and improve the financial viability of the fitness and recreation program and membership within the business unit.
  • To report weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually on fitness and recreation programs including finance, participation and quality of service.
  • To evaluate and report on relevant programs conducted to meet the needs of current members and appeal to potential future members.
  • To submit all fitness and recreation programs within scheduled Engagement periods.
  • To assist in the coordination of the key Association events.
  • To provide adequate floor supervision where needed.
  • To contribute to the overall retention percentage increase for fitness members.
  • To ensure the Occupational Health and Safety and all other compliance processes are met.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential
  • Appropriate Degree level qualifications and experience in fitness, recreation, sport science and or relevant associated area
  • Qualifications in at least one of the currently offered Group Fitness Classes
  • Experience in group fitness program coordination
  • Demonstrated experience in the coordination of fitness, recreation programs or projects
  • Well-developed communication, negotiation and inter-personal skills
  • Experience delivering outcomes within resource allocation and budget
  • Demonstrated leadership and people management skills
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of computers and a good understanding of their application in the sport and recreation industry
  • Effective organizational and time management skills
  • Effective written skills, verbal communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and flexibility
  • A Class C License; First Aid Certificate; National Police Clearance
Desirable
  • Experience in supervising fitness instructors and /or fitness centre staff where relevant
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Recreation and University sector
  • Experience in Personal Training and Coaching
  • Demonstrated capacity to utilise software required for proper operation of the Association programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physiology and fitness training principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the maintenance of fitness equipment
  • Very well developed fitness appraisal, leadership and class instruction skills
  • LR Class Drivers License
