Teacher’s Name: Miss Melissa Ray Grade Level: Preschool

*Performance Indicator(s) with infused content: 7.2.2 Demonstrate (proper hand washing techniques) behaviors that avoid or reduce health risks.

Name of Lesson: How to Wash Hands

I.  Goal: Students will be able to demonstrate the correct way to wash their hands using soap and water. Students may also sing a song while doing it if that helps them.

II.  Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the correct way to wash hands
  2. Sing a song while washing their hands

III.  Adaptations for Diverse Learners: No specific diversity needed for this lesson. Step Stools will be provided for those students who are not tall enough to reach the sink. Each student will get one-on-one time with me so I can observe them washing their hands.

IV.  Materials:

  1. http://youtu.be/cWISRb2RMbs (YouTube video)
  2. Computer
  3. Sink
  4. Soap
  5. Paper Towels
  6. Step Stool (if needed)
  7. Poster in the bathroom of song

V.  Procedure:

a.  Set/Hook: Show the video of Soapy the Germinator.

b.  Transition: After the video is over, we will talk about some of the things the soapy said is important when washing our hands.

c.  Main Lesson: Students stand up and I will teach them the words to the song (attached handout/poster). Students may use this song when they are washing their hands with me. I will demonstrate the correct way to wash hands in front of all the children while singing our new song. I will call each child up individually and help them learn the correct way. While I am working with one individual students, the other children will be coloring a worksheet that reinforces that proper hand washing.

d.  Transition: Once all the children are done, we can sing the song together one more time to continue to practice it and so every child learn it. I would have all the children meet at the circle again.

e.  Conclusion: Have the children talk things we learned from the video as well as actually washing out hands.

VI.  Assessment: In the next few days after this lesson, I would observe students washing their hands without me saying anything to them and see what students understood what was taught and who or what we may need to practice on as a whole group. I would continue to use this hand washing song each morning during Calendar time so that the children remember it.

VII.  Assignment: None
