AP Biology Summer Review Assignment

In Advanced Placement Biology it is necessary for you to have a firm understanding of the topics discussed in your General Biology class. Below is a list of topic / subjects / questions. You will be tested on these topics the first week of school. Do not just write an answer down and think this is the extent of your development of a CLEAR and FIRM understanding.

Chemistry

·  Carbohydrates, lipids, protein, and nucleic acids

o  Structure of each, how can you tell from the formal what type of compound it is

o  Biological significance

Cells

·  The following parts AND functions.

o  The cell membrane, mitochondria, chloroplast, and the nucleus

·  Active transport, passive transport, osmosis and diffusion

o  What each are, what they move, and if they use energy or not

·  Mitosis phases recognition and time in stage

·  Meiosis phases recognition

Genetics

·  Punnett squares: how to set them up and complete crosses

·  Homozygous, heterozygous, hybrid, purebred (be very familiar with the use of these words)

·  Pedigrees (how to use)

Ecology

·  Land and Water Biome characteristics (plants, animals, soil, and weather)

·  Food webs/food chains and energy pyramid

·  Chemical cycles

o  Nitrogen, carbon and water

Behavior

·  Understand and be able to apply the following types of behaviors

o  Symbiosis, comensalism, mutualism and parasitism

o  Learned vs. innate behaviors

During the first week of school you will take an exam. The exam will be multiple choice and essay. The things you might need to know about AP Biology: we do not use notes during any exam and most exams consist of both multiple choice and essay questions.
