Course

Description:This is an advanced 8th grade course that is designed to prepare students to enter Algebra II at the high school level. Students have been placed in this course based on their NWEA scores and successfully completing the advanced Algebra I course.

Class

Text:Geometry – McGraw-Hill (Glencoe)

Online component: connected.mcgraw-hill.com

Materials:The student is expected to bring their text book(s), binder, pencil, paper, and their planner to class on a daily basis.

Grading

Grade

Composition:Formative assignments are assignments that are assigned prior to an assessment and will not be a part of the student’s grade.

Formative assignments will receive a grade of 3, 2, 1, or 0.

3 = mastery

2 = close to mastery, few errors

1 = assignment has been attempted but has multiple errors

0 = assignment not complete or turned in

Summative assignments are assessments that count towards a student’s grade.

Additional

Help:There will be multiple opportunities provided during each quarter where I will be available for students to either retake their summatives or for tutoring, if needed.

Correction

Policy:Any and all work can be completed for full credit, as long as it is turned in before the end of the marking period or before the deadline posted on the board.

* In order to retake a summative assessment, a student must first have completed all formative and summative assignments prior to retaking the summative assessment. There must be no grade lower than a “4” on any formative assignment.

When a student is retaking a summative, they only have to attempt the incorrect work. Students are required to bring the original copy of the summative and then put the corrected work on an additional sheet of paper, which will be stapled to the original summative.

Online

Component:Glencoe also offers on online component for the material. Students are encouraged to use the online resources to strengthen their knowledge of the material. Students will also be required to turn in Self-Check Quizzes, which will count in the grade book as summative grades.

Classroom

Expectations:Cell Phones – There are to be no cell phones in class. Ring Lardner has a rule that states that any cell phone that is seen is taken and turned in to the administration with a referral. There is zero tolerance for this. Turn the phone off and leave it in your locker.

Respect for others - Being respectful is treating others how you would like to be treated. Being respectful also includes valuing the learning environment, and classmates’ ideas and opinions. Students must be able to feel comfortable and accepted to benefit from instruction. Respecting school and classmates’ property is also expected of students.

Responsibility forms – Anytime a student is asked to leave the room for a discipline issue, they are required to fill out a responsibility form. The purpose of the responsibility form is for the student to have a chance to reflect on their behavior and give them a chance to “cool off” before coming back into the room. If the responsibility form is not completed, there will be a parent call home.

Water bottles – Water bottles are allowed in class. The only requirement is that it has to be in a clear plastic bottle and must contain water only.
