Joan M. Amann

J

oan Marjory Russell, daughter of Myrtle and Fred Russell, was born December 19, 1928 in Newton, Kansas. She had one brother, Gerald Russell. Joan grew up in Wichita and graduated from Wichita East High in 1946.

On August 11, 1946, Joan was united in marriage to Leonard Joy Amann in Wichita, KS, shortly after he returned from tour of duty in the Pacific aboard a destroyer escort. Joan and Leonard lived in Wichita where Leonard worked as a manager in Safeway stores, and Joan worked as a full-time homemaker. Their union was blessed with the birth of three children, Michael (1948), James (1950), and Susan (1952). Michael became ill with Lymphoma and passed away in 1962 at the age 14.

The Amann family moved from Wichita to Lindsborg in 1962 and two years later, they moved to McPherson when Leonard became co-owner of Eldon’s IGA. Joan spent several years working at Ebaugh’s Gifts before she began working at Peoples Bank and Trust as a teller, a position she held for over 20 years. She retired from the bank in 1994.

Joan loved life! Family, friends and her church were all very important to her. Joan was a member of First Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. One of Joan’s greatest joys was traveling – she saw many countries and areas throughout the world and always came home with lots of stories and photos to share. The last trip she took was in 2009 when she went to Egypt with a group from McPherson College.

Joan was diagnosed with Mantle B Cell Lymphoma in 2010. She put up a valiant fight to recover, but lost the battle on Christmas Day 2011. She entered eternal rest at her home, surrounded by family.

Survivors include: a son, Jim Amann (Aggie Windholz) of McPherson; a daughter, Sue Nelson (Lowell) of McPherson, KS; a brother, Gerald Russell (Madeline) of Lakeland, FL; six

Time has taken me from you

Although not very far.

I’ll be watching through the sunshine

And through the brightest star.

I’ll be watching all of you,

From the heavens up above.

So take good care of each other

And carry all my love.

If you’re ever wondering

If I’m there, here’s where you can start.

Take a look inside yourself

Deep within your heart.

I’ll always be your Mother,

Your Grandma, Your Great-Grandma,

or your best friend.

So anytime you need me,

Close your eyes I’m back again.

In Loving Memory
