COURSE MATERIALS:

Required Reading: Will be assigned throughout course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The course will focus on development of advocacy skills to better serve the needs of the underserved and vulnerable populations.

Objectives:

1.  Describe the current U.S. health care delivery system.

2.  Describe the social, cultural and economic milieu in which the unique needs of specific vulnerable populations arise.

3.  Define the responsibilities of physicians in advocating for these populations in clinical settings and in the community.

4.  Describe the role of physicians in advocating for these populations in clinical settings and in the community.

5.  Describe community organizations working to enhance the health and well-being of underserved communities.

6.  Describe how the medical community can effectively partner with community to better meet the needs of vulnerable populations.

7.  Identify public policy initiatives that could improve the health of vulnerable populations and communities.

8.  Describe legislative strategies to implement policy initiatives.

9.  Describe approaches for implementing health care reform including proposals, strengths and deficiencies.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

This is an elective course that will be graded primarily on participation and completion of written assignments. Required readings will be provided to support discussions. We will expect regular attendance at the scheduled time. One excused absence will be permitted. Further absences may require additional work and should be discussed with the course director in order to achieve credit for the course.

There will be 2 brief assignments to be completed during the 8-week course.

1)  Develop Legislative Fact Sheets

2)  Op-Ed – each student will be responsible for writing an Opinion-Editorial on a health care issue of his or her choice.

CLASS EVALUATION REQUIREMENT:

Students are required to complete an online course evaluation for this class before a final grade can be given.
