Human Genetic Disorder Brochure

Introduction:

There are literally thousands of human genetic disorders. These disorders have a wide range of symptoms and affect people in a variety of ways. Genetic disorders are usually passed on from parent to offspring through chromosomes. Most genetic disorders do not have a cure, there is only treatment of symptoms. Parents have many questions when they have a child diagnosed with a genetic disorder. Your job is to research a genetic disorder and create a pamphlet to help parents understand a specific disorder.

Task:

1. You will be workingby yourself.

2. Choose a disease. Spend sometime looking at a variety of diseases and find one that looks interesting to you.

3. Research your disorder. Your pamphlet needs to contain an overview of the following:

1.  What the disorder is?

2.  What causes the disorder(what gene is responsible) and how is it inherited(dominant, recessive, sex-linked)?

3.  What are the signs and symptoms?

4.  How is it diagnosed?

5.  How is it treated?

6.  Howcommon is the disorder (such as 1 in 1000)?

7.  What are the chances of a person with this disease passing the disease to their offspring (include possible scenarios such as Punnett Squares)?

8.  What is the life expectancy of someone with the disease?

9.  Describe a typical day for a person who has this disorder.

10.  What are some organizations that can help a family cope with a child's disorder (web links)?

Remember, this brochure is for parents whose child has been diagnosed with this disease. Make sure that you don't just cut and paste!!!! The information needs to be in your own words and understandable to the average person. Make sure you include pictures. Don't forget to site the source if you take pictures from other web sites (you can do this by pasting the address in a small font under the picture). Any pictures you use need to relate to the disease and not just be random pictures. Make sure you include a bibliography of the sources you used!!!

All Brochures are due on May 29th
