Political entities offer voters much to consider in Tuesday’s Joint Election

HOUSTON –November 4, 2007 –Voters who head to the polls on Tuesday, November 6 to vote in the Harris County Joint Election will have much to consider. There will be approximately 103 items on the ballot, including 61 propositions and 42 contests for public office. Houstonians will vote in up to 34 items and voters outside the county’s largest political jurisdiction will vote in up to 24 contests. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“The ballot in this election may not be sexy,but it has plenty of substance. That is, it may not have hotly contested races at the top of the ballot, but is full of important issues that merit the attention of the voters,” stated Harris County Clerk Beverly Kaufman, the chief elections officer of the County, who is encouraging all registered voters to vote. “We will have 728 polling locations and approximately 3,700 elections clerks ready to receive any one of the 1,798,327 million registered voters in HarrisCountywho wantto vote.”

There are thirty-one(31) entities participating in Tuesday’s Joint Election, including: the State of Texas; Harris County; Port of Houston Authority of Harris County; City of Houston;City of Baytown; City of Bellaire; City of Seabrook; City of Southside Place; Houston Community College System; Aldine ISD; Alief ISD; Cypress-Fairbanks ISD; Houston ISD; Klein ISD; North Forest ISD; Spring ISD; Spring Branch ISD; Harris County ESD Nos. 9 & 48; Waller-Harris ESD No. 200; Harris County FWSD No. 47; Harris County MUD Nos. 50, 168, 402 & 421; Southwest Harris County MUD No. 1; West Park MUD; Harris County UD No. 15; Greenwood UD; Grant Road PUD; Harris County WCID Nos. 74; 96 & 136; Harris County WCID Fondren Road.

The Clerk reminds voters that to ensure that their vote is counted, persons must vote at the precinct where they are registered on Election Day.Aside from a voter registration certificate, acceptable forms of identification to vote include, a driver’s license, a picture identification of any kind, a birth certificate, a U.S. Citizenship or Naturalization certificate, a U.S passport, official correspondence addressing the voter by name from a governmental entity, a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other governmental document that shows the name and address of the voter.

The Clerk also reminds voters that according to federal law andthe Texas election code a voter may bring someone of their choosing to the polling place to provide assistance, provided it is not their labor union representative, employer, an agent of their employer, or an officer or agent of a labor union to which the voter belongs. The person providing assistance must sign the Affidavit of Voter Assistance and print his/her name on the poll list, to attest to the fact that they will not unduly influence the voter.
