Meeting Minutes, November 18, 2013

Members Present: Maria Gonzales, Will Wise, Kathy Severson, Susan Barnes, Leota Fussell,Delorise Mathis,Julie Price, Debbie Markham, Diana Manriquez, and Kristen Spahr

Members Not Present:Amanda Wood, Jim Selph, Martha Jo Markey, Minerva Ortiz, Elvia Valdovinos, Carmen Rodriguez, and J. Worthington

The meeting was called to order by Mrs. Seversonat 1:00 p.m.

Roll Call was made and minutes of the September 16, 2013 meeting were presented and approved as written.

Old Business

Mrs. Severson announced that computer based testing numbers are continuing to increase.

Mrs. Severson thanked committee members for their responses to the email vote taken to approve the 2013-2014 School Improvement Plan in October.

New Business

Mrs. Severson announced that an additional $3,500 was received by the Family Service Center for our AGE programs.

Mrs. Severson distributed and reviewed enrollment comparisons between last school year and this school year as follows:

Dr. McCoy distributed and reviewed an update of Adult Career Pathways. To date, the Adult Career Pathways program has enrolled 120 students. Activities include: workshops, an internship/volunteer program, typing tutor, job coaching, Ready-to-Work, job observation/shadowing/exploration and CHOICES. He also reported that the Family Service Center will be interfacing with Heartland Workforce more in the future.

Mrs. Severson reported that close to 100 GED diplomas have been earned since January 1, 2013. Mrs. Severson and Ms. Barnes went to the Civil commitment Center in September and tested five residents. They will return in December to test again.

The anticipated GED changes will soon be here. Effective January 1, 2014 there will be no more paper-pencil tests; those who have partially passed the 2002 GED test will have to start over; and the level of difficulty is expected to increase especially in math.

In an effort to meet the testing needs of students, the Family Service Center will be open to give the GED test December 30 and December 31.

A motion to accept Elvia Valdovinos, Diana Manriquez, Kristen Spahr, and Delorise Mathis as members of the Adult Education SAC was made by Sheriff Wise and seconded by Debbie Markham. The motion carried unanimously.

Due to retirement and changes in jobs, several members of the SAC need to be removed from membership. A motion to remove Raye Southwell, Dan Dubbert, Kenneth Johnson, Linda Waters, and Asya Whitlock from the Adult Education SAC was made by Debbie Markham and seconded by Julie Price. The motion carried unanimously.

Mrs. Severson welcomed our new members.

As discussed at the last SAC meeting, Mrs. Severson made a motion to changethe SAC meeting time from 2:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in order to have students serve on the council. The motion was seconded by Sheriff Wise and carried unanimously.

Mrs. Severson reported that the Family Literacy Program to date is serving 22 families with24 children (age birth to 4 years). She also reported that one of the literacy students recently earned her GED diploma.

Mrs. Price reported that six students who completed the program last year have taken the state boards and five passed. The other five students are still waiting to take the boards and the one is waiting to retest. She reported that there are 11 students in this year’s program and they call themselves the “SUPER Nurses” (Sympathetic, Understanding, Patient, Excellent, Reliable). She gave a brief review of the clinicals and activities the students have participated in.

Diana Manriquez, an LPN student who completed the CNA program at the FSC, said the class is quite a learning experience.

Debbie Markham reported that First State Bank is very busy.

Sheriff Wise of the DCSO reported there are currently 161 inmates and the state crime rate has reached a 42year low.

Kristen Spahr of DeSoto Memorial Hospital announced that a county-wide emergency drill was held October 2. The drill was a great success. She thanked Mrs. Price and her students for their participation in the drill. A video of the drill has been made and will be on YouTube within a couple of days. She also reported that DeSoto Memorial Hospital’s new website is up and running, She encouraged all to check it out.

The next meeting date will be February 10, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.
