1. Research facilities must have a mechanism in place for ensuring that animals are reported in the appropriate pain category. During the review of proposed animal studies, there must be adequate consideration for all issues that may compromise animal welfare, including prolonged distress without intervention. The IACUC must ensure these studies are appropriately identified and monitored.

Issue / Yes / No / Comments regarding the review
Has the PI assigned the appropriate category of pain and distress to this protocol and, when necessary, provided the appropriate written justification?
(Note: Category B is appropriate for breeders that will no have any research procedures performed on them. However, if tail snips are necessary for genotyping, Category D is appropriate).
Has the PI identified and properly categorized any animals that might have more than momentary pain or distress associated with their physical condition (i.e. functional deficit associated with the particular genotype such as tumor formation, diabetes, glaucoma) that would not be relived by analgesics?

2. The reviewer will document any deviations from the Guide which will then be discussed when reviewing the ACORP. The reviewer’s check list will provide the IACUC Coordinator with a written list of these deviations so that the deviations can be flagged and monitored during the semi-annual review and during the post approval monitoring. ***Please pay close attention to the following ACORP questions, and any other issues that you feel are applicable, which might represent a deviation from the Guide.
