POSITION DESCRIPTION

Dental Director, Dentist

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Dental Director is the leader of the dental program team whose primary responsibilities are activities as a dentist providing care for patients and directing departmental activities in accordance with accepted national standards and administrative policies. The Director formulates policies and recommends procedural changes to the Chief Executive Officer. Establishes training programs to advance knowledge and clinical skill levels of dentists and other dental staff. In collaboration with Dental Office Manager hires, evaluates, and disciplines staff members. Establishes work schedules and assigns staff members to maximize efficient use of staff. Observes and assists staff members at work to ensure safe and ethical practices and to solve problems and demonstrate positive techniques. Confers with Chief Executive Officer regarding leadership and management for dental clinic, develops budget and statistical reports, oversees purchase of equipment and supplies. The Dental Director works collaboratively with the Chief Executive Officer to ensure an efficient and cost effective dental program.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Director Responsibilities (0.1 - 0.2 FTE)

1.  Advises OneWorld CHC Chief Executive Officer, other staff members and dental support regarding establishment, operation and training within the Dental Department.

2.  Leads and manages Dental Clinic programs and services. This includes monitoring to determine status regarding equipment, material and personnel for compliance with dental standards, resolving problems pertaining to procurement, training and assignment of dental personnel. Directs, prepares and disseminates professional data pertaining to new dental procedures and techniques.

3.  Actively participates in patient treatment, establishes and implements quality and performance improvement plan and activities. Coordinates the Dental Peer review function and conducts retrospective dental health records audits on a quarterly basis.

4.  Develop, implement, and report on outcomes for the oral health care work plan.

5.  Maintain adequate and current dental records. All files, charts, records, dental or otherwise generated by the employee during this employment are the property of the employer.

6.  Provides leadership by example and ensures orientation and competency training of newly assigned dental staff members.

7.  Oversees radiation safety program, ensures compliance with Nebraska regulations relative to patient care areas. Develop policies and procedures for OSHA, radiation safety and ensure training and compliance for all dental staff members.

8.  Ensures Joint Commission compliance. Assists in Joint Commission policy development.

9.  Accountable for preparation and monitoring of the departmental budget. Participate in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor clinical program portions of the approved budget.

10.  Represent the organization to outside agencies and organizations as appropriate.

11.  Prepare technical and administrative reports; prepare written correspondence.

12.  Annual or semi-annual work plan, monthly written reports and monthly benchmarks submitted to Chief Executive Officer.

13.  Identify, evaluate, and implement office protocols and procedures to improve efficiency of workflow, create a “team” environment, and ensure clinical excellence and patient satisfaction.

14.  Develop a dental clinic operations policy manual and ensure training and compliance for all dental staff members.

15.  Leads and directs the work of the dental support staff.

16.  Resolve patient and staff conflicts in a respectful and positive manner.

17.  Purchasing of front office and dental supplies.

B. Dentist Responsibilities (0.6 - .08 FTE)
1. Emergency services: diagnosis and treatment of pain, infection, swelling, bleeding, and trauma.

2.  Primary prevention to included oral health education, topical and systemic fluorides, periodontal prophylaxis, medical and dental exams, dental sealants as appropriate.

3.  Secondary prevention to include periodic examinations with radiographs, prompt treatment of oral lesions, compulsory exams.

4.  Basic oral services to include restorative, basic endodontics, occasional crowns, basic oral surgery, and space maintenance.

5.  Maintain adequate and current dental records. All files, charts, records, dental or otherwise generated by the employee during this employment are the property of the employer.

C. Human Resource Management and Communication

1.  Work with health professions' schools and training programs to train dentists, residents, dental assistants or other; ancillary dental staff as times and resources allow. Such activity may not impair the ability of the OneWorld dental program to reach self-sufficiency.

2.  Responsible for the efficient operation of dental services by managing a staff of dentists and dental manager who in turn manages support staff.

3.  Recommend the appointment of personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; recommend discipline and communicate with CEO and Dental Manager; implement discipline procedures as directed; maintain discipline and high standards necessary for the efficient, timely, and professional operation of the department.

4.  Provides effective job orientation and on-going training to volunteers and new employees at OneWorld. Teaches other members of the dental office team as required or assigned.

5.  Responsible for effective and ongoing training and monitoring of competencies of Dental Staff. Documentation of required vaccines and yearly TB test and works with Human Resources to maintain records of training activities and documentation.

6.  Provide feedback, guidance, training, mentoring, coaching, evaluating and support to improve performance as well as discipline when necessary.

7.  Work with all functional team heads throughout the year to insure that expenditures adhere to legal and budgetary requirements.

8.  Reviews requests for vacation time and continuing education courses to insure adequate staffing

9.  Fosters and models positive and empowering attitude towards all staff. Provides team building, coaching, and staff appreciation.

10.  Models team based management, program development and problem solving.

11.  Build and maintain positive relationships with co-workers, and the public using principles of good customer service.

12.  Perform other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

The Dental Director reports to and is supervised and evaluated by the Chief Executive Officer. The employee and the Chief Executive Officer shall meet regularly to coordinate areas of mutual concern, including but not limited to the area of dental health planning and budgeting.

EVALUATION:

The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the Chief Executive Officer at the community health center and will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Requires graduation from an accredited dental school with a degree of Doctor in Dentistry; current Nebraska license, plus two or more years clinical/office and administrative experience in a clinic setting strongly preferred.

2.  Two to three years experience as a dentist.

3.  Qualified in BLS Basic Life Support techniques.

4.  Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of general dentistry and oral surgery.

5.  Ability and experience in supervising others.

6.  Ability to operate all types of dental equipment.

7.  The ability to employ necessary management techniques in the supervision of staff.

8.  The ability to analyze complex information and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

9.  The ability to set priorities and to make decisions on critical health care programs and issues.

10.  Personal and professional qualities which will permit the Dental Director to work with the staff of the health care center in such a manner as to earn their confidence and respect.

11.  No history of criminal professional liability malpractice, felony.

STATUS:

This is a FLSA exempt position.

This is an OSHA high-risk position.

This is an ADA negotiable position.

SALARY:

The salary for this position is negotiated between the individual and Chief Executive Officer using the approved salary scale of the organization as a basis.
