Why Join This Skit?

Are you looking for something funnyand easy to pull off? Not interested in singing show tunes or having to learn Bob Fosse dance moves? Hoping to maintain the last vestiges of your dignity with a Dads’ Night costume that won’t make you look like you’re heading to a parade in the West Village? Well today is your lucky day, my lazy-ass friend! Here’s a skit that can offer you:

  • A chance to be out front on stage for the entire skit, not rolling on for a 10 second cameo as ‘Tree #3’.
  • No complicated lines to memorize. No uncomplicated ones, either!
  • Minimal rehearsal time, maximum comedic effect for the kids.
  • A ridiculously easy costume that you’ll reuse outside of Dads’ Night. (And did I mention male clothing?)
  • A chance to answer anyone who asks what skit you were in with “The one that was actually funny!”

The Bit:

Tapeface is the modern day mime/prop comic from New Zealand that almost won the latest season of America’s Got Talent….with no talent at all. He’s now touring Las Vegas with the AGT winners, after having already stormed British TV and performed all over the world. He doesn’t say a word, thanks to the big piece of black tape over his mouth. He just launches into a variety of music-driven pantomime bits. We’re going to steal one of those bits and act it out with 12-16 guys, all dressed as Tapeface. It’s a simple visual gag that the Harlem Wizards have also used in their act, involving four guys in four chairs:

- Lean on

But to kick up the humor a notch, we’ll have 3-4 sets of guys in chairs all leaning on each other at once. It’ll add a level of franticness, trying to manage the multiple groups (like keeping a whole bunch of spinning plates going at the same time).

Simple. Effective. Timeless comedy. And well within the skillset of all you that didn’t exactly go to Julliard.

Why it works

Timeless comedy

  • He’s the distilled essence of vaudevillian silent films, brought to today’s generation.
  • Think of a modern day Charlie Chaplin….Andy Kaufman singing the Mighty Mouse songwith props….or the evolution of Mr. Bean. Tape Face is all that and more.
  • Hard to describe, but instantly likeable.

Popular:

  • AGT was hugely popular, so lots of kids know him and will be dressing as him for Halloween.
  • The skit still works if you don’t know him, I’d argue it works even better. Think of the immediate visual impact of Haka, without the recurring nightmares afterwards.

Easy to Execute:

  • No dialogue AT ALL. Think of all the time the directors will save not having to yell at guys to deliver their lines to the mics!
  • Tons of options for bits – We can steal the moves and the song choices (verbatim?), plus come up with our own pairings.
  • Comedy so simple that a bunch of drunk dads can actually pull it off.
