The Educational Plan of Doctoral Graduate Students in Structural Engineering

The Educational Plan of Doctoral Graduate Students in Structural Engineering

A2.5-year MengProgrammein Structural Engineering

I. Introduction

Structural Engineering is a subordinate discipline in civil engineering andhas been playing an important role in the urban construction, national economy and social development. Structural Engineering has a century history and is one of the most powerful and important disciplines in Tongji University, whichhas considerable influence in academic and engineering fieldsbecause of outstanding educationand great scientific research achievements. Structural Engineering discipline was ranked as National KeyDiscipline in China Discipline Assessment in 1987 andagain in 2006 and Shanghai KeyDiscipline in 2001.

II.Objectives

a. To enable students to systematically understand the fundamental theories and advanced knowledge at the forefront of structural engineering, to thoroughly understand research methodologies of a basic level;b. To enable students to practice in engineering project and research project; c. To enable students to develop their capabilities to lifelong learn and create innovations with the ultimate goal of grooming them to be Engineer leaders of tomorrow in China and around the world.

III.Research Area

a. Concrete structures and masonry structures. b. Steel structures and timber structures. c. Space structures. d. Structural analysis. e. Disaster reduction of structural and lifeline engineering. f. Structural health monitoring and structural control g. Structural life-time design and maintenance.

IV.Program Duration

A2.5-year Meng programme is offered for applicants who have a BSc degree. The normal duration for this programme is 2.5 years, including 1~1.5 years for coursework and at least 1 year for research and thesis writing. The maximum duration is 4 years.

V.Credit

A master student in this programme must complete at least 39 credits of courses, including 6 credits of general academic degree courses, at least 18 credits of discipline-specific academic degree courses, at least 8 credits of non-academic degree courses, and 8 credits of required segments. The credits of non-academic degree courses can be substituted by the credits of discipline-specific academic degree courses.

VI.Thesis

a. Thesis proposal defenseof a master graduate student should be organizedaccording to theRegulation of Education of a MasterGraduate Student in Tongji University. There must be a public presentation followed byQ&A and evaluation. The number of proposal defense committeemembersis not fewer than 3, including the student’s advisor. The number of reviewed references should be more than 30.

b. Master thesis should pass two peer-reviews before defense. Thesis defense of a master graduate student should be organized according to theRegulation of Education of a MasterGraduate Student in Tongji University. There must be a public presentation followed byQ&A and evaluation. The number of thesis defense committeemembers is not fewer than 3, excluding the student’s advisor. The number of reviewed references in final thesis must be more than 50.

c. All master theses must go through the blind peer-review organizedby Graduate School.
