Part I – Financial Need Scholarships

The following scholarships are for students who are in need of financial assistance to pay for college. Along with the application, a copy of the EFC found on the SAR Report from the FAFSA will be required for these scholarships.To access your FAFSA Student Aid Report, log on to FAFSA.ed.gov and click on “View and Print your Student Aid Report”. Select the year you want to print. Enter the requested Student Access Information. Select the Transaction you want to print. The screen will display your “Processing Information”. The entire report can be printed by clicking on “Print Summary”.

  • Baltimore Design Group

One scholarship at $1,000

Description:General scholarship for student pursuing a college degree or vocational training in any

of the following fields: Interior Design, Architecture, Graphic Art, Commercial Art,

Photography.

Criteria:Student must maintain a 2.5 GPA, have financial need

Required:Completed scholarship application, counselor recommendation, a small portfolio of their work submitted along with a minimum 300 word essay about their desire to pursue this

career path.

Beacon Hill Women’s Club #1 (Need Based)

Two scholarships at $500 each

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Financial need, academic achievement with involvement in extracurricular activities

Required:Completed scholarship application; counselor recommendation

One scholarship for a student pursuing a teaching career, amount varies

  • PW Custodial, Maintenance & Transportation Workers Scholarship

Two scholarships for $500 each

Description: General scholarship for study in college, vocational or technical school.

Criteria: A student in good standing, financial need, participates in extracurricular

activities (sports, band/orchestra, clubs, steady employment, volunteer)

Required: Completed scholarship application, two recommendations

(teacher, employer, coach, counselor). A personal statement with career

plans and whatever you would like to say (dreams, hopes, philosophy,

goals, opinions, accomplishments)

Community Chest Scholarship Fund

The number and amount of the scholarships vary each year

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Financial need; minimum GPA of 2.5

Required:By the due date of this application: one copy of completed scholarship application,a counselor recommendation, a personal statement (which can be your college essay), and a copy of the FAFSA/Student Aid Report.

In addition, by May 1: provide the name ofthe college you will be attending and a copy of your financial aid award letter from that college to the Guidance Department. If you are undecided, or have not yet receivedyour financial aid award letter, please let the Guidance Department know.

  • Daisy Bacon Scholarship Fund

Criteria:Students with outstanding quality of character, doing their best with their God-given

intelligence in their grades and studies; financial need.

One scholarship for a student involved in performing arts

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Financial need; academic performance and dedication to the performing

arts at Schreiber High School

Dr. E.K.and Joyce Johnson Memorial Scholarship

One scholarship for $100

Description:Scholarship for study at a college program for medicine or a related area

Criteria:Financial need; involvement in athletics and extracurricular activities

Required:Completed scholarship application;counselor recommendation

  • Gold Coast Family Dental Scholarship

One scholarship for $1,000

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Must be a student who attended Port Washington schools for at least 4 years,

Financial need, minimum GPA of 4.0, varsity athletic participation

Required:Completed scholarship application, counselor recommendation, provide an essay on desire to study and work in the science field.

Harvey Lewis Foundation Scholarship

Renewable for each of 4 years, the number and amount of scholarships vary

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Financial need

Required:Four (4) copies of the common scholarship application; 1 copyof the family’s latest tax return (first two pages); 2 teacher recommendations; counselor recommendation

Port Washington Association of Educational Secretaries (PWAES)

Two scholarships for $500

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Financial need; academic achievement

  • Port Washington Paumanok Masonic Lodge 855 Tibbits Fund Scholarship

Number and amount of awards vary

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Financial need; academic achievement

Required:Completed scholarship application; counselor recommendation; copy of family’s most

recent tax return (first two pages); brief essay describing plans for future and why you

deserve the scholarship.

One scholarship for $500

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Community service; school service and financial need

Required:Completed scholarship application; counselor recommendation; an

essay explaining how you have enhanced and/or maintained the Port Washington community.

Sumeet Chopra Memorial Scholarship

One scholarship, amount varies

Description:Scholarship for study in education or a helping profession

Criteria:Financial need; academic achievement

Required:Completed scholarship application; counselor recommendation

Part II – Non-financial need based scholarships

The following scholarships do not require any proof of financial need.

AGATE – Toula J. Halperin Award for Academic Excellence
The number and amount of scholarships vary

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Overall academic excellence and outstanding achievement

in one specific area. Minimum GPA 4.0., SAT/ACT scores from CollegeBoard.org

Required:Completed scholarship application (omit financial information)

Submit a graded paper from any subject area or a piece of

original writing, artwork, photography, audiotape or videotape

that demonstrates talent in a particular area OR an essay describing

an area of talent/aptitude demonstrating excellence, commitment

and/or leadership in improving lives of others. Counselor

recommendation

  • The Ed. Foundation Scholarship (Formerly PWEF)

One scholarship for $500

Description: General scholarship for college study

Criteria:All college-bound seniors are eligible, with the exception of relatives of current Ed.

Foundation board members and advisors who are excluded from applying.

Required: Completed scholarship application, applicants must be in academic good standing,

must provide transcript, activity sheet, and/or resume, and an essay in response to the

following question:

How has The Ed. Foundation (formerly PWEF) affected your educational experience in Port Washington? Your response could include information regarding any Ed. Foundation grants, an experience at The Ed. Foundation Support Center, the impact of an Ed.Foundation technology grant in your classroom, participation on a trip that was funded by The Ed Foundation, etc. Please limit your response to no more than one page. Although The Ed. Foundation does not require a formal recommendation letter, please provide the name of one teacher who can serve as a reference to be contacted if needed.

  • The Don Schaefer Scholarship

One award for $500

Description: As a token of appreciation for Mr. Schaefer’s commitment and contributions to

Schreiber students, a scholarship has been established in his honor for college study.

Criteria:The Ed. Foundation will award a student who demonstrates a passion for technology

and the valuesfor which Don stands.All college-bound seniors are eligible, with the

exception ofrelatives of current Ed. Foundation board members and advisors who are

excluded from applying.

Required: Completed scholarship application, applicants must be in academic good standing,

must provide transcript, activity sheet, and/or resume, and the following essays:

  1. Describe a technology project you worked on at Schreiber and what you learned from the experience. AND either essay 2 or 3
  2. Tell us about your future plans to pursue a career in technology. Or
  3. How will technology play a role in your career plans?

Please limit your response to no more than one page. Although The Ed. Foundation does not require a formal recommendation letter, please provide the name of one teacher who can serve as a reference to be contacted if needed.

  • FKPC Scholarship (Faith Korean Presbyterian Church of LI)

Two scholarships for $1,000 each

Description: General scholarship for college study

Criteria:To aid and motivate Korean-American students in pursuing their education to

become outstanding members of their communities.

Required:Completed scholarship application, copy of the family’s latest tax return (2014) or family financial statement, and a personal statement (can either be in Korean or in English).

  • The Happy Montessori School of Port Washington

One scholarship for $1,000

Description:General award for college study

Criteria:Student must be a graduate of The Happy Montessori School

Required: Completed scholarship application; counselor recommendation, student must have a

strong GPA, with a minimum of 3.0. The student must be carrying a demanding course

load and must be involved in at least two extra-curricular activities. In the case of a tie,

financial need will be used as a criterion.

  • HEARTS Award for Excellence in the Arts

Two awards, $500 each

Description:Scholarship for students who are continuing with higher education with a primary focus

in a field of creative arts (e.g. music, performing arts, fine arts, film-making, creative

writing, etc.).

Criteria:Candidates have made significant contributions and provided leadership to help enrich,

support and promote the arts among their fellow students and within the greater Port

Washington Community.

Required:Completed scholarship application; counselor recommendation and one (1)

recommendation from a teacher in the Creative Arts Department. Write a brief

description of what you hope to accomplish creatively in the future. You may submit a

sample or any supplemental material that you have created (musical score, CD, poetry,

fiction or non-fiction writing, film, documentary, visual arts, etc.).

Jan Havasy Memorial Scholarship

Two scholarships, the amount varies

Description:Scholarship for college study in nursing, teaching or the ministry

Criteria:Student in good standing planning a career in nursing, teaching, or the ministry

Required:Completedscholarship application; 1 teacher recommendation; counselor recommendation

  • Janie and Dan Rankin Memorial Scholarship

One scholarship for $500

Description: General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Student who works hard, cares about the people around you; whether they are

family, friends or friends you’ve yet to meet

Required:Completed scholarship application; submit an essay on “What Port Means to Me”.

Joshua David Blumenfeld Memorial Scholarship

Number and amount of scholarships vary

Description: Scholarship award for college or vocational/technical study.

Criteria: Past or present ESL student in the Port Washington School District; financial need

Required: Completedscholarship application; one ESL Department

recommendation; Counselor recommendation

Justin Bakst Scholarship # 1 – Positive Qualities & Participation in Sports

Two scholarships for $1,500 each

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Positive personal qualities and participation in sports, extracurricular participation;

demonstrates school spirit; 2.5 GPA

Required:Completed copy of scholarship application and a counselor recommendation

Justin Bakst Scholarship in Arts & Writing in Honor of His Sister, Lauren Elizabeth Bakst

One scholarship for $1,500 each

Description:General scholarship for college study

Criteria:Student must be active in theatre and arts at Schreiber High School and pursuing a career in the arts, writing field.

Required:Completed copy of scholarship application and a counselor recommendation

  • Levine-Kaufman Memorial Award

Two scholarships for $1,000 each, 1 male & 1 female

Description: General scholarship for college study, a true teammate with unselfish devotion.

Criteria:Student who has participated in a youth sports program as well as varsity sports on an interscholastic level. Maintain a reasonable academic record.

Required:Completed scholarship application; submit an essay (1,000 words or less) describing their athletic career with respect to their team participation and individual contribution whether they received awards or not.

  • Peggy Gallagher Award

One Award - $500 savings bond

Description:General award for college study

Criteria:Former Manorhaven Elementary School student who was enrolled in a Kindergarten

Class taught by Fredda Meltzer and Peggy Gallagher

Required:Completed scholarship application; essay on a Kindergarten experience or memory with or about Mrs. Gallagher in Kindergarten. Essay must demonstrate attributes of

student’s kindness, cooperation and creativity.

Port Washington Police Department (PWPD)PBA Sheila Breen Scholarship

Description:Scholarship for study of law or law enforcement

Criteria:Port Washington Police Dept. District resident; financial need; academic achievement.

Port Washington Teachers Association (PWTA)

Criteria:Top half of class; active in school/community

Required:Completed scholarship application; an essay that includes why you feel you are deserving of this scholarship, how you have contributed to the school and/or community and how your years in the Port Washington schools have helped you to develop as a person; 1 teacher recommendation; counselor recommendation

Student Council Scholarship
