Course Objective and/or Description: Students will build on the knowledge and skills for mathematics in Grades 6-8, which provide a foundation in linear relationships, number and operations, and proportionality. Students will study linear, quadratic, and exponential functions and their related transformations, equations, and associated solutions. Students will connect functions and their associated solutions in both mathematical and real-world situations. Students will use technology to collect and explore data and analyze statistical relationships. In addition, students will study polynomials of degree one and two, radical expressions, sequences, and laws of exponents. Students will generate and solve linear systems with two equations and two variables and will create new functions through transformations. This course will include the appropriate use of graphing technology. This course requires an EOC exam.

Text, Readings, Materials: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: Texas Algebra 1

The guidelines for grading and make-up work can be found here: CISD Grading Policy

Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism and academic dishonesty are serious offenses. The academic work of a student is expected to be his/her own effort. Students must give the author(s) credit for any source material used. To represent ideas or interpretations taken from a source without giving credit is a flagrant act. To present a borrowed passage after having changed a few works, even if the source is cited, is also plagiarism. Students who commit any act of academic dishonesty may receive a failing grade in that portion of the course work. Acts of academic dishonesty will be reported to the administration.

Materials

●PENCILS!! (BRING EVERY DAY)

Flipped Classroom:

Flipped classroomis an instructional strategy and a type ofblended learningthat reverses the traditionallearning environmentby delivering instructional content, often online, outside of the classroom. It moves activities, including those that may have traditionally been considered homework, into the classroom. In a flipped classroom, students watch online lectures, collaborate in online discussions, or carry out research at home and engage in concepts in the classroom with the guidance of a mentor. Flipped classrooms also redefine in-class activities. In-class lessons accompanying flipped classroom may include activity learning or more traditional homework problems, among other practices, to engage students in the content.

Attendance

  • If absent, you will need to get together with another student, check online for the video notes, etc.
  • If you know you will be absent, you need to pick up any work beforehand so you won’t fall behind.

Class Participation

  • When the bell rings students are expected to be sitting in their seat working on the assignment, watching their video or waiting for instruction from me.
  • Every student will need a chromebook to be able to participate in the flipped classroom.

Phones

  • If a phone is being used in my classroom, I will take it up.

Cheating:

If you can’t explain what you wrote down, then you are cheating.

This includes but is not limited to: copying someone’shomework or in class assignments, copying answersfrom the internet, letting someone else copy your work, using a cheat sheet for a quiz or test, having someone else’s hw paper, etc.

No grade is worth cheating over. In the end you hurt yourself and your classmates. I take this very seriously, trust is hard to rebuild.

  • Students who cheat will receive a 0 on the assignment/quiz/test and a referral to the office.

Tutorials:

  • All students are encouraged to come to tutorials before school or after school
  • If you have trouble with any math question, you are expected to come in the morning or afternoon for tutorials before the homework is due.
  • Once a week, students can earn one merit for coming to tutorials. Be sure to sign in.

Bonus Opportunities:

  • One merit = +5 on a quiz of your choice
  • No absences for the six weeks = +1 on report card, no tardy for the six weeks = +1 on report card
  • 100% attendance on test day = +1 on test
  • Any other bonus opportunities will be announced in class

How to Help Your Child Succeed in Their Math Class
1. Help your child to ask questions in classand in tutorials. “I don’t understand this!” is NOT a question. “Can you help me see where I made a mistake in working problem #3?” is something we can work with.

2. If your child is having difficulty, encourage him or her to come in for tutorials. I am available Monday/Wednesdaymornings, Tuesday/Thursday afternoons, and by appointment.

3. Help your child to organize his or her time and prioritize tasks.

4. Encourage your child to persevere in spite of challenges. Remember that it’s better to learn how to struggle now than when they are off by themselves in college.

5. Please contact me right away with any concerns you might have about your child’s performance. My email is .

I work very hard to help all students master the concepts and skills of Algebra 2. Student success will depend on many factors, including previous math knowledge and personal motivation. With all of us working together, we can help to ensure that your child has the best possible learning experience.
