Practical Skills Assignment

Students will, every Friday, learn and practice practical skills to produce fashion products. We will learn at least 3 practical skills over the course of the semester.

Students will hand in at least 2 products at the end of the year which they have designed and made.

Write Up

Each item will include a write-up (1/2 to 1 page) explaining what the product is, why they chose to do it, and how the elements and principles of design are used in it.

Practical Skills Assignment #1 - Sewing

Using hand sewing technology, recycle an old piece of clothing into something new, demonstrating your understanding of the elements and principles of design.

  • You must use a running stitch, an overhand or whip stitch and one other skill (button, appliqué, blanket stitch, machine stitch etc.)

Practical Skills Assignment #2 – Weaving

Using a cardboard loom and yarn or recycled fabric, weave a small bag showing understanding of the elements and principles of design.

  • Attach a button and cord or handle.
