Background to Dorothy House Hospice

Dorothy House Hospice provides care and support to patients and their families in a community covering an area of 700 sq miles and over 550,000 people in Bath and North East Somerset and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. Respecting the uniqueness of each patient and their family, and empowering them to choose the type of care they receive, whether they need it at home, in the hospice, or at one of our outreach centres. Dorothy House has changed immeasurably since 1976 when founder Prue Dufour started a service based at her home in Bath to care for terminally ill patients in their community rather than in hospital. Although there have been many advancements and changes through the years from the hospice’s beginning to the current day our purpose has remained the same, to provide compassionate care to our community to enable those with lifelimiting illness to live well and die well. As a leading provider of high quality end of life care education, we work in partnership with others to provide responsive, innovative education, which challenges and influences the growth and transformation of care. Dorothy House’s education department has become well-established with a local, regional and national reputation for delivering a range of high quality health and social care programmes, ensuring the very best care is provided wherever and whenever it is needed.
