JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:Education Curator

Department:Programmes

Main purpose of the job:The Education Curator researches and develops pioneering models of working with artists and community groups, schools, Further and Higher and Educationinstitutions and is responsible for deliveringthe youth and family programmes. They are responsible for all workshops and projects at the Galleryas well as the production of innovative learning resources.

Reports to:Head of Programmes

Liaises with:All levels of contact, internal and external.

Main duties:

Education

  • Keep up-to-date with current issues and developments in contemporary art and art education
  • Work with the Programmes Team to develop and implement a strategic long-term plan with formal education providers, community groups, youth groups and families
  • Keep abreast of current developments in learning policy and the National Curriculum
  • Develop and maintain relationships with national bodies and strategic organisations
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the implications of the Disability Discrimination Act and the Equality Act and an innovative approach to audience development and access and diversity
  • Develop and produce innovative resources for families and teachers, including online learning tools

Administration

  • Deal with all correspondence and contracts for artists involved in the Learning Programme
  • Liaise with artists, schools, community groups and other organisations to arrange projects, workshops and education events
  • Keep all staff updated on events and ensure that there are no clashes with other Gallery events
  • Inform the Gallery Management team about events and provide them with all of the essential information, including risk assessments
  • Monitor and provide evaluation and documentation of all learning activity for reports to funders
  • Ensure the Gallery's mailing list is regularly updated
  • Arrange special mailings for education events
  • Ensure and administer Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure checks for all freelancers
  • Manage the Education Space, equipment and materials
  • Ensure that the Child Protection Policy and Procedures are regularly updated and followed by all staff involved in the Learning Programme
  • Be responsible for archiving materials

Family Programme

  • Develop a strategy with the Head of Programmes for Family Learning at the Gallery
  • Work with the Head of Programmes to program and organise Family Events
  • Manage artists who run the Family Programme
  • Promote and deal with all queries from the public relating to the Family Programme
  • Provide qualitative and quantitative evaluation for the Family Programme

Courses for Young People

  • Develop a strategy for the inclusion of Young People, with the Head of Programmes
  • Recruit and manage artists to lead projects for Young People
  • Recruit and maintain relationships with Young People and strategic relationships with youth organisations
  • Register and advise young people on the Arts Awards (Arts Council of England)

Events/projects

  • Arrange relevant events for each exhibition
  • Work with the Head of Press and Head of Programmes to promote these and other events and also arrange mailings of learning materials as appropriate
  • Arrange special events as and when required
  • Work with the Education Project Curator and Public Programmes Curator to develop and organise projects, events and programmes

Budgeting and Finance

  • Ensure orders are placed for all agreed expenditure
  • Ensure that all expenditure is within agreed budgets approved by the Head of Programmes
  • Administer invoices and maintain Excel spread sheets

Fundraising

  • Provide clear and concise project descriptions and reports to the Head of Grants for applications to Trusts and Foundations, Sponsors, Westminster City Council and Arts Council England
  • Provide monitoring and evaluation of all workshops and projects

General

  • All staff share in answering the telephone and dealing with general enquiries from the public.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • 5 years relevant experience
  • Excellent knowledge of modern and contemporary art and gallery education
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent administration skills
  • Excellent PC literacy and experience of Excel and database mailing-list management
  • Experience of speaking in public to a wide range of audiences about modern and contemporary art
  • Experience of producing learning resources
  • Ability to work under pressure, and work flexibly and co-operatively as part of a team

Hours: / Normal office hours 10.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday, although the jobholder will be expected, within reason, to work such hours outside these periods as are necessary for the proper fulfilment of the duties described in the Job Description
Annual Leave: / 22 days holiday, rising incrementally after qualifying period
Contributory Pension scheme: / Group Personal Pension Plan (after 3 month probationary period)

Gallery Contribution: 3%
