August 17, 2016

Dear Students,

I’m excited to spend the upcoming school year teaching and learning with all of you. We have so much to accomplish and do but it is so important for us to know each other, so let me begin by telling you a little about myself. My name is Tabitha Pang and by the end of this August, I will be 38 years old. I grew up with a family of women – my grandmother, my aunty, and my mother. I love all of them, but the person I get along with most is my grandmother because I am an old soul and because she is where I’m from. My favorite movie this year was Finding Dory – I was so visually captivated and it was simply amazing. My favorite book is Siddhartha by Herman Hessealthough,Life of Pi by Yann Martell is a close second.

My English class last year was filled with lively and memorable students. It was my third year teaching at Luther Burbank Middle School and I loved it. We focused on many skills and topics last year in English class. I enjoyed teaching the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, it was great to see students laugh out loud. I challenged students with learning about allusions and it helped them see new connections that they hadn’t seen before. One project that I enjoyed last year was learning more about the refugee crisis and writing letters to the Governor about our opinions. And while English has always been my favorite subject, as a teacher of the subject, I find reading and grading student essays to be the hardest part.

What kind of teacher am I? Well, I love teaching and I enjoy middle school because I love the energy and hope that middle school students have. My greatest expectation of students and myself is respect – we must demonstrate respect and kindness in everything we say and do. I expect the classroom to be a place where we can read, write, think, and be creative and thoughtful in a safe and peaceful space. So there can be times when we are all buzzing with discussion but there will also be times when we are all quietly reading or writing or thinking. Final thing to know, is that there will be both good and difficult times between us as we do well or as we make mistakes, however, at the end of the day, remember that I do, care!

Sincerely,

Ms. Pang
