S.P.C.A. A D O P T I O N P O L I C I E S

When considering adopting an animal from the S.P.C.A., the following represents the S.P.C.A.’s policies that must be strictly adhered to:

  1. You must be prepared to pay a fee:$75.00 for a dog or puppy, $75.00 for a cat or kitten. This fee includes deworming. Any additional expenses such as Micro chipping, Vaccinations, Spay/Neuter, Shipping, Town Tagsetc will be added onto the adoption fees. Animals adopted staying in GooseBay receive 20% discount off 1st needle and spaying/neutering from the Vet. Animals adopted going to Lab City receive 15% off spaying/neutering from the Vet.
  1. You must be 18 years of age or older to adopt and responsible for an animal (proof of age may be required). The SPCA if needed can request a Code of Conduct to be obtained and has the right to deny anyone with criminal charges pending or if one has a Criminal Record (this information will be kept strictly confidential). SPCA has the right to deny any application pertaining to the above.
  1. You must have your animal spayed or neutered when it reaches the proper age. Expect to pay a minimum of $250.00 for the procedure. No animal will be given to anyone who refuses to have it spayed or neutered. The spaying and neutering of animals is mandatory and this WILL be enforced. Failure to do so can result in animal being removed. Any Communitywithout access to a Veterinarian Clinic, the SPCA has the right to request/require that spay/neuter is preformed prior to shipping.NOTE:Application CAN BE denied if current pets in household are not spay/neutered, vaccinations up to date or have not received proper vet care if required.
  1. You must be willing to keep your dog indoors and not to be kept as an outdoor dog and must have a fenced in yard for dogs of a certain size.
  1. You must provide the S.P.C.A. with a letter of reference (if requested) from someone known to the S.P.C.A. to be a good animal owner. This letter of reference must be received prior to any application being approved.
  1. You must be aware that the S.P.C.A. may do a check on you and your property prior to an adoption being approved as well as random checks on you and your adopted animal at any time after an adoption is approved. Local Animal Enforcement Officers may also be contacted to ensure there are no roaming issues etc…
  1. You must have your animal examined by the veterinarian within seven (7) days after you adopt an animal from the Shelter. A copy of a receipt issued by the local Vet will suffice as evidence that your new pet has been examined. Permission is hereby given to the SPCA to contact Vet for release of info pertaining to needles and spay/neuter of pet.
  1. You must understand that we will need to speak to all adults currently residing in your household; also operational telephone is required.
  1. If a couple is separated or divorces, neither party can adopt a pet for the other’s household. The person who is to be responsible for the animal must be present to sign the adoption application.
  1. No large dogs are to be adopted to persons living in apartments and special permission will be given for adopting more than one pet only one puppy or dog at a time may be adopted unless special permission is given.

  1. Pets are not to be adopted as gifts for others, unless special permission is granted.
  1. You must understand that permission from your landlord must be obtained prior to an adoption being approved as well as prior to bringing an animal home. A letter from your landlord may be requested.
  1. You must understand that we cannot guarantee the health of our animals and you should understand that we cannot guarantee that an animal has received any training or is housebroken.
  1. You should be prepared to have any animal you adopt as a house pet and you should understand the time commitment involved in owning an animal.
  1. You must understand that if a problem arises, the animal should not be sold or given to another home unless the S.P.C.A. is advised and permission given by the S.P.C.A..
  1. If a previous animal has died of any airborne contagious disease, the adopters must wait a minimum of one (1) month before any animal of the same species can be introduced to that same environment.
  1. Pets are to be in the yard for exercise only, under supervision. No animal will be kept tied up, kept in dog houses, pens, runs or kennels or in any type of garage, shed, laundry room, basement, etc. for any extended period of time.
  1. Adoptions are not permitted to persons who are suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  1. An animal can be held for one (1) week only, except under certain circumstances where it may be held up to a maximum of 2 - 3 weeks with a monetary deposit.
  1. After adoption of an animal is complete, the animal is the responsibility of the adopter(s), but the S.P.C.A. can, at any time, intervene if it is suspected that the animal is in any way being neglected and / or abused. The S.P.C.A. reserves the right to remove the animal if the S.P.C.A. feels the animal is not properly being looked after. Also, the S.P.C.A. reserves the right to have access to any animal adopted through the S.P.C.A. at any time.

  1. The Happy Valley - Goose Bay S.P.C.A. reserves the right to deny, or reject, any application of any person(s) who does not meet the S.P.C.A.’s specified adoption criteria.
