Assembly with its newM-2iA/3AL Parallel-Link

“Genkotsu” Robotat IMTS 2014For Immediate Release

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich., Sept. 8, 2014 –FANUC America Corporation demonstrates intelligent assembly with its new M-2iA/3AL parallel-link“Genkotsu” robot during IMTS 2014, Sept. 8-13, at McCormick Place, Chicago, booth #S-8919.

An M-2iA/3AL robot will pick up automotive battery cells and place them upright into an assembly magazine. iRVision® and iRVision PickTool software will track parts on theinfeedconveyor, and the M-2iA/3AL will fill a rack with 14identical cells. Thebattery assembly fixture will utilize a slight angle to keep batteries upright. A mechanism will slide and re-circulate parts onto the conveyor and the process repeats.

“The new M-2iA/3AL hasathree-axis articulated wrist for flexible applications, providing the full articulation that no other parallel-link robot can achieve,” said Phil Zanotti, product manager, FANUC America.

The new M-2iA/3A (short arm) and M-2iA/3AL (long arm) robots are the latest additions to the M-2iA series of high-speed parallel-link robots. Both robots offer six-axes of motionand a three kg payload for high-speed kitting and assembly applications.

Intelligent M-2iA Robot

The M-2iA series has six models. In addition to the new M-2iA/3A and M-2iA/3AL robots, the series includes the M-2iA/3S and M-2iA/3SL models offering a three kg payload, and four-axes of motion with a single-axis rotation at the wrist, and the M-2iA/6H and M-2iA/6HL robots offering a six kg payload and three-axes of motion for super high-speed picking

The M-2iA operates with FANUC’s latest R-30iB controller with integrated intelligent functions such as iRVision, Force Sensing, Robot Link, and Collision Guard.

The M-2iA robot offers a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Portable and compact size allows operation in small spaces.
  • M-2iA/3A and M-2iA/3AL models offer a three kg payload and six-axis design for reliable kitting, part standing, polishing and assembly applications.
  • M-2iA/3S and M-2iA/3SL models offer a three kg payload, four-axis design (single-axis wrist) to accurately move parts at extremely high-speeds.
  • The M-2iA/6H and M-2iA/6HL models offer three-axes of motion for super high-speed picking, and a six kg payload.

  • A hollow wrist allows tooling cables to be routed internally, minimizing wear and tear.(Does not apply to six-axis model)
  • Food option features a special coating to handle acid and alkaline disinfectants.
  • Ability to work with primary (unpackaged) or secondary (packaged) food products.
  • Optional IP69K rating for the entire robot means the robot is waterproof and can withstand harsh environments, including dust and high-pressure cleaning.
  • Supports FANUC’s latest intelligent features including iRVision and force sensing.
  • Collision Guard detects robot collisions with external objects, minimizing damage to the part and robot.
  • Robot Link controls and coordinates up to ten robots through a network exchange of robot positional data.

FANUC iRVision

FANUC iRVision is a truly integrated, plug-and-go vision system that runs on the standard CPU of every FANUC R-30iB controller without any additional hardware. A single source solution developed and supported by FANUC, iRVision offers easy setup and operation for factory environments requiring 2D and 3D guidance, error proofing, visual tracking, and quality control – all with FANUC’s world-renowned reliability.

Next Generation R-30iB Controller

The FANUC R-30iB Controller uses high-performance hardware and the latest advances in network communications, integrated iRVision, and motion control functions. The R-30iB Controller features FANUC’s exclusive new and easy-to-use iPendant with 4D graphics. The iPendant displays process information and the actual process path directly on the iPendant screen, enabling easier setup and troubleshooting.

Based on the latest FANUC Series 30iB CNC Controller, the R-30iB Robot Controller is compact, providing customers a significant space savings. The R-30iB Controller is also energy efficient, requiring less power consumption than previous models, and available with an optional power regeneration feature.
