Course Description

An advanced ballet technique course for students with an emphasis in dance, and for students interested in developing advanced skills in ballet. Progressions of development with ballet vocabulary and technical skills. This course is designed to increase difficulty at the barre, center practice and traveling steps. Dance 3100 is a continuation of Dance 2100.

Course Objective

  1. To learn advanced ballet exercises for mastering the placement and coordination of the body, legs, arms and head.
  2. To develop correct technique and alignment necessary for all dance forms.
  3. To learn advanced combinations and phrases as performance experience.
  4. To appreciate the complexity, joy, and beauty of movement as expressed through ballet.

Attendance

  1. Absences or tardiness are not permitted. Four absences will result in a failing grade. For every two times you are tardy, you will be marked for one absence. Students should arrive as early as possible to change clothing and warm-up before class begins. Students will be marked tardy after bell has rung. If a student is more than ten minutes late for class, he/she will not be allowed to participate in class. However, the student will be allowed to observe class and write a one-page paper on the observation; student will still be marked tardy.
  2. Make-ups: The prior notification of school excused absences and medical emergency release forms will be accepted for make-ups. If student has an excused absence, the class must still be made up. Students may make up excused absences by attending an approved ballet class or by writing a two-page concert critique. The midterm movement review, terminology test and final end-of-class showing can be made-up for half credit.

Requirements

  1. Attire: Clean leotards, pink tights, soft pink ballet shoes, hair in bun (or in pony tail, if short hair). No shirts, shorts, pants, skirts, or warm-ups during class (if there is an injury, leg warmers may be approved by instructor). No loose jewelry.

Assignments

  1. Ballet Performance Critique

Choose to view one live ballet concert or ballet video and write a two-page critique. Turn in critique no longer than two weeks after viewing performance and attach a copy of the dance program to the critique. Please approve concert viewing with instructor. Critiques are due on ???.

  1. Dance Company Concert

In addition to the ballet concert critique students are also required to attend the Dance Company Concert, December 1st and 2nd at 7:30 at the Eccles Fine Arts Center Main Stage Theatre and write a two-page critique focusing on the ballet pieces. Critiques are due on ???.

  1. Midterm Movement Review

On ??? we will have a midterm movement review where students will demonstrate the barre and center technique learned up to that point. Students will be graded on musicality, technique, performance quality, improvement and work ethic. This review will be videotaped for students to view on the following class day. Dance attire for review follows the same as for every day.

  1. Ballet Terminology Test

This will be a test on basic ballet terms learned throughout the semester. All terms and positions will be found in the Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet. The test will be given on Thursday, December 8th and consist of matching, multiple choice, true/false, and will have a fill in the blank section for arm, arabesque positions and body directions. (pg. 126-137, French and Russian methods) See attachment for terms.

  1. Final: End-of-Semester Dance Class Showing

This is the end of semester performance and final movement evaluation. Students from each dance technique classand dance composition class will present a 5-8 minute demonstration from materials learned throughout the semester. The workshop will take place on ??? at the Eccles Fine Arts Center Main Stage Theatre. Students are required to be there 30 minutes prior for a warm-up. Black leotards and skirts are to be worn with pink tights. Students will be graded similar to midterm review but with much emphasis on overall improvement and performance quality.

Grading

The course grade will be determined on a percentage basis, by participation in class, progress, and completion of all assignments by due date or the last day of class. No incomplete will be accepted without signed permission of program administrator.
