CHARACTER WORD OF THE MONTH –SELF-CONTROL

PBIS – The continuation of our PBIS Program is off to a great start! Two weeks ago, K - 5th grade students were able to redeem their “tokens” in the Rocket Fueling Station. Various items have been donated or purchased for students to select from in the store. Throughout this week, students who didn’t receive an office discipline referral (ODR) will participate in our monthly classroom celebration, which will consist of a dodgeball game where students vs. faculty. Students who received an office discipline referral will be retaught the expectations through cool tool lessons or social stories.

Fire Safety Presentations – Members of the Greenville Fire Department will be at GES on Tuesday, October 10th and 11th sharing information with all KRP – 5th grade students about the importance of fire safety, checking smoke detectors and changing batteriesas well as having a family plan. Presentations will begin shortly after the state mandated school-wide fire drill on the 10th. In addition, students in KRP – 2nd grades have the opportunity to see one of the department’s fire trucks.

Cell Phones and School Zones – On January 1, 2010, Illinois passed a law prohibiting cell phone use in school zones. Illinois Public Act 096-0131 prohibits cell phone use (talking and texting) while driving in a school zone. For the safety of our children, please make sure you adhere to this Illinois law while you are driving on school property.

Transportation & Contact Changes – It is important for parents to notify office personnel if their child(ren) will be going home by way of alternate route. This may be done via written note or calling the office. Without a note or phone call, students will be sent home by means of their designated primary transportation. Changes need to be made prior to 2:00 p.m. to allow office staff adequate time to relay the message to your child and his/her teacher. In addition, if you have a new home, cell or work number, please provide the office with this information. It is difficult to communicate with parents/guardians when the information in the office records is incorrect.

McTeacher Night – GES McTeacher Night will be held on Tuesday, October 10th from 4:00p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Greenville McDonalds. Teachers and staff will be working and visiting with students and families as they come and enjoy some dinner. The school will receive a percentage of sales and the profit will be used for various school related projects or needs. We hope to see you at McTeacher Night!

Parent Teacher or Student-Led Conferences – Parent Teacher or Student-Led Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 19thand Tuesday, October 24th from 3:30 – 7:00. Teachers will begin sending information home with students to schedule/remind parents of the conferences. To alleviate the number of conferences on these two nights and to better accommodate parent schedules, some teachers may schedule conferences on other days as well. I encourage you to take part in the conferences as academic progress will be discussed, concerns registered and your questions answered.

End of 1st Quarter & Report Cards – It’s hard to believe but the first quarter ends on Friday, October 13th. Report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, October 20th. Each quarter we also recognize 3rd-5th students who achieve Honor Roll Status (A’s & B’s) and High Honor Status (All A’s). In addition, students who have perfect attendance are recognized.

Pumpkin Contest – The GES Library will be hosting its annual Pumpkin Contest this month. From October 3rd – 16th, students in K-2nd grade can participate in the library’s Pumpkin Coloring Contest. In addition, the week of October 23rd, all students (K-5th) may participate in the decorated pumpkin contest. Students can bring their decorated pumpkins to school on the 23rd. Judging will take place during the morning of the 26th. Students can start taking pumpkins home after school on the 27th. ALL pumpkins must be brought in and picked up by parents. Pumpkins will not be permitted on the bus. Any pumpkin not picked up by the end of the school day on the 27th will be discarded.

Breakfast Reminder – If you provide morning transportation for your child(ren) and intend for them to eat a breakfast provided by the school, it is important to ensure your child is at school by 8:00. We want to make sure students have enough time to eat prior to heading to class. In addition, students can’t be dropped off at school until 7:45.

Parent Club Information

The Parent Club Box Top Competition kicked off Monday, September 25th and concludes October 20th. Students are encouraged to turn in their collected Box Tops in an effort to raise funds for the Parent Club. The class bringing the most Box Tops in will earn aMinion Snack Party.

In addition to the Box Top Competition, the Parent Club will have a Cookie Dough Fundraiser. Students are asked to sell Cookie Dough from Tuesday, October 10ththrough Monday, October 23rd. Pick up day for cookie dough orders will take place Thursday, November 23rd in GES Cafeteria from 5:00 – 6:30.

Special thanks to the Parent Club for providing two areas in the school where students can sit and read. These areas are known as the Rocket Reading areas. This is a great means of helping us promote reading. Next time you are in school, feel free to stop by and check them out!

Helping Hearts – During the month of September, GES students began raising funds for those affected by natural disasters in the U.S. Each class accepted donations and as a school, $2,203.46 was raised. Mrs. Clark’s class raised $470.60 and earned a class pizza party. Mrs. Schaefer’s class raised $263.15 and earned a class cookie party. We also want to recognize Devin Wheat from Mrs. Rinella’s class who brought in over $200.00. Special thanks to Sue at Bradford Bank for helping with the money count. Thanks to all for supporting those in need. What a great example of caring and citizenship!

Halloween Expectations - STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BRING COSTUMES OR DRESS UP FOR HALLOWEEN. Mr. Brauns and Mr. Swingler will be hosting a fall cookout (grilling hotdogs for students and staff). Some classrooms may be having Fall treats or parties. This is up to the discretion of each classroom teacher.
