The Late Middle Ages: Social and Political Breakdown (1300-1453)

Directions- In your own words answer the following questions. Be sure to be concise but thorough. Be sure to answer all parts of the question (who, what, when, where, why, how-if applicable) Please highlight the significance of each with a highlighter. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. You are encourages to use other sources other than your textbook for your answers. In fact, much of the in-depth information you may need will not be found in the textbook (Wikipedia is fine for an intro class such as ours).

1. The Hundred Years’ War- what did it mean for France and England in terms of politics, economy, military success or failure for both short term and long term?

2. The Battle of Agincourt and the Battle of Crecy. What do they have in common, what are the key points, and what new weapons made their debut?

3. Joan of Arc- brief bio and why is she such a big deal back then and now?

4. Treaty of Troyes (1420) - Why could there not be a lasting peace during this war? Why couldn’t the Pope get two Catholic countries to stop killing each other?

5. Black Plague (Death) what were its causes and effects. How effective or ineffective was medieval medicine in combating the plague- why?

6. Estates General (define)- why was it called? What effect did it have?

7. After reading p. 40 “Dealing with Death”, what does this tell us about life in this period (3 things and briefly explain).

8. Peasant revolts in France (1358) and England (1351) - what were their issues?, how were they deal with?, what changed for them? What does this say about where power lies?

9. Define a guild- what is their purpose?

10. John Wycliff and John Huss- were they a challenge to the Church? If so, how? What happened to these two? How are they in the same situation as the peasants in #8?

11. The Great Schism and BabylonianCaptivity- what caused it, what were its effects and how was it solved?

12. Explain how Russia was similar and different than the social, political, economic and religious experiences of those in Western Europe?

13. Looking from the Catholic Churchperspective put the Black Plague, the 100 Years War, and the Great Schism together. What are the church policy makers thinking? And from the common person’s point of view- what are they thinking about the Church?

14. War of the Roses- who fought it and why and what was the result. (Not much at all in your text-need to look it up).

15. Briefly explain the rise and fall of Kiev and Moscow- and for that matter Russia.

1. The Middle Ages has been called a period of chaos and disunity. Do you agree with this assessment? If so, what political, social, and economic factors contributed to the instability and disunity? If not, what factors worked toward stabilizing society?
