Policy

Diapering will be implemented in designated place that is safe and sanitary to prevent the spread of communicable disease and maintains the privacy of the child being diapered.

Procedure

  1. Diapering will be done promptly when child is wet or soiled. They should be checked hourly and when the child exhibits behavior that suggests a wet or soiled diaper.
  1. An area will be designated, and used for diapering that is located away from cooking, eating, and children's activities. The Diaper Changing Procedures (Appendix KK of the Licensing Requirements for Child Care Programs) must be posted in designated area.
  1. The surface will be waterproof, clean, and sanitary, and in good repair at all times.It will be at least the size of the child and not used for any other purpose.
  1. Head Start will provide clean cloth diapers or disposable diapers for each child.
  1. Individual clean washcloths, towels, or disposable wipes, that are provided by the Head Start Program, are used to thoroughly cleanse the child during each change and are washed or discarded after each use.
  1. Only Head Start Staff, Special Needs Worker, or Parent will engage in the diapering of the Head Start child. Child will be attended to at all times.
  1. The following procedures must be followed to ensure safety to the children and caregiver:
  2. Have all needed supplies. In reach of personnel but out of reach of children. (Disposable gloves, moisture-proof bag, disinfectant, wipes, diaper/clothes)
  3. Wash hands and put on disposable gloves.
  4. Place child on diapering surface.
  5. Remove child's clothes, and take off soiled diaper.
  6. Place soiled diaper in a sealed moisture-proof bag, or stored in a covered container, which is cleaned daily.
  7. Clean child's genitalia and bottom, front to back with a disposable wipe.
  8. Place soiled wipe in the moisture-proof bag with the diaper, tie bag off and if disposable place in trash can away from food services and children's activities.
  9. Put clean diaper and clothing on child.
  10. Remove and discard gloves, wash your hands and the child's hands with soap.
  11. With new gloves on, clean mat with soap and water and sanitize with sanitizing solution.
  12. Again, remove and discard gloves. Being sure to use the handling procedures for blood borne pathogens.
  13. Wash hands thoroughly.
  14. Document diaper change on Diaper Changing Log KHS-121 and keep in designated folder.
