Development Manager at

The Shrine of St. Jude (British Province of Carmelites)

Job Description

General Background

The Order of Carmelites is a religious order in the Roman Catholic Church first established in the 13th Century. For administration purposes the Order is divided into local regional jurisdictions. The British Province of Carmelites represents the presence of the Order of Carmelites in England, Scotland and Wales and is made up of professed Carmelite friars, some of whom are ordained, lay professed members of the Order, and other lay members with different degrees of affiliation.

The Carmelite Charitable Trust, hereafter CCT, (Reg. 1061342) is the registered charity which supports the various works and initiatives of the British Province of Carmelites.

The two main income streams currently supporting the work of the CCT are:

a)Income generated by St. Jude Newsletter Office based at the Shrine of St. Jude in Faversham, Kent. This broadly falls into two areas:

i)Income in response to a mass market newsletter (16,500 copies sent quarterly) which generates donations alongside small amounts generated by an annual raffle and through sale of religious items and donations made at the Shrine.

ii)Legacies left to the Shrine.

b)Investment income generated by cash invested on the stock market. Funds are held by two investment companies some of which is in designated but not restricted funds to fund areas such as formation of new members, mission contribution etc.

Recent years have seen an increase in lay members of the Order and other professional lay people working alongside the Carmelite Friars in the fulfilment of their work. Some of these roles are those which would previously have been undertaken by friar members of the Order.

The need to employ people, and the increased and increasing costs of supporting elderly and infirm members of the Order, have meant that traditional income streams are becoming insufficient for need. There is heavy reliance on income from legacies and some inroads have been made into reserves to maintain commitments. However, the employment of lay professionals has also provided creative opportunities for collaboration which have enriched the work and outreach of the Carmelites and which they wish to continue.
