Claudio Roditi

Born in 1946 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Claudio Roditi began his musical studies when he was just six years old. His parents noticed that he loved to tap out rhythms on the table and bought him his first real instrument: a set of bongo drums. By the time he was nine, Claudio had fallen in love with the trumpet, and by twelve, he had already become a serious jazz listener. The young trumpeter was named a finalist in the International Jazz Competition in Vienna in 1966, and the following year he moved to Mexico City, where he was active on the contemporary music scene.

Drawn to the United States to study and absorb jazz, Claudio relocated to Boston in 1970 and studied at Berklee College of Music. Later he joined the faculty of the School of Contemporary Music and rounded out his schedule with club and concert performances. In 1976, he made the move to the jazz mecca of the world, New York City.

After his arrival in New York, Claudio performed and/or recorded with many of the jazz greats, including Joe Henderson, Charlie Rouse, Herbie Mann, Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera, and McCoy Tyner, among others. Beginning in 1989, Claudio traveled for several years as a member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra. Currently he performs with the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, a Gillespie tribute group conducted by Slide Hampton. His solo work on the CD "Symphonic Bossa Nova" with Ettore Stratta and the Royal Philharmonic earned him a Grammy nomination in 1995. Currently a resident of New Jersey, Claudio leads his own band and tours worldwide with several leading jazz groups. He also conducts clinics and master classes throughout the U.S. and Europe, and sees advanced students privately.

With nineteen critically acclaimed releases to his credit, Claudio Roditi is truly an artist on the move with his music. Integrating post-bop elements and Brazilian rhythmic concepts into his palette with ease, he plays with power and lyricism. This versatility keeps the trumpeter/flugelhornist in demand as a leader, a studio musician and a sideman.

JAZZ ARTISTS ON THE GREENS 2008

HISTORY OF THE SHOW

With the successful production of the sixth edition of Jazz Artists on the Greens 2008 recently completed in Trinidad, Production One Ltd. ventures to the sister island of Tobago for the inaugural TOBAGO edition of this flagship event. To be held on April 24, 2008, in the middle of the "Jazz Week" in Tobago, this event heralds the inclusion of a dose of real Jazz into a week of festivities which will see thousands of spectators and music fans converging in Tobago for the Festivities of the so-named "Jazz Week."

A perceptive writer noted that "jazz events have become de rigueur throughout the world of international tourism, and the jazz festival concept has blossomed into big business. Though billed as jazz festivals, the majority of these events in the Caribbean have taken to packing their schedules with everything from pop to R&B in order to attract younger, broader audiences." In sharp contrast, Production One Ltd. has been successfully producing its flagship event, Jazz Artists On The Greens, annually since 2003 with an ear tuned to traditional jazz and its Caribbean variation.

Encouraged by the growing interest shown by long starved jazz fans at small events such as "Jazz on the Avenue", (a Caribbean Jazz recital event created and produced fortnightly in early 2003 by its associate company, S.T. Jazz, Inc.), Production One Ltd. prepared for its inaugural event, Jazz Artists on The Greens, that would be hosted in June 2003 within a larger, festival setting at a park.

Leaning towards the Caribbean Jazz idiom for inspiration, and with the intention of bringing a touch of class to local jazz, the objective was to expose as many new patrons and young musicians as possible to Jazz, in an informal setting that could help remove much of the mystique that seemed to surround the genre. To quote Production One Ltd. director, Rolf Doyle, "Jazz Artists On The Greens is a first step towards a local jazz festival similar in popularity and size to those held annually in St. Lucia and Barbados, but always remaining true to the jazz." The event has grown from strength to strength, ever widening its base of regional performers...and its audience.
