Accredited Automotive Theft Investigator

International Association of Auto Theft Investigators

Australasian Branch

From the IAATI (Australasian Branch) SOP Manual…

Statement of Purpose:

The International Association of Auto Theft Investigators has established this Recognition of Accreditation Program (RAP) in a continued effort to reduce vehicle theft and recognise competency levels of investigators in their specific area. This Recognition of Accreditation Program is aligned with the International organisations Certification program and along with the Australasian Recognition of Accreditation and as such a dual Accreditation/Certification with the Australasian Branch and International organisation shall be awarded.

This Standard Operating Procedures Manual sets forth minimum professional qualifications (competencies) for the recognition of vehicle theft investigators (law enforcement, motor vehicle transport investigators and insurance professionals). The following guide was established to assist investigators in making application to the Review Board for recognition in their specialised area.

Accreditation is based on recognition of the investigator or applicant having the necessary knowledge and skills within their specialised area of the industry.

The Accreditation program shall:

  • Acknowledge demonstrated competence in all phases of auto theft detection, reduction or prevention,
  • Recognise professional standards of achievement in auto theft crime theory and practice by police, government, investigators, technicians, and insurance stakeholders,
  • Encourage the continuing education and training in the field of auto theft crime management,
  • Increase professional standing in the auto theft crime management field, and
  • Identify the sources of professional knowledge and practice of auto theft crime management.

Accreditation will be current for a period of 5 years at which time, unless renewed, it lapses.

What are the requirements needed to qualify?

Certification by IAATI as an Accredited Auto Theft Specialist recognises a level of expertise that is consistent with being an industry leader. To this end, the entry requirements reflect that a candidate must have been working in the field of auto theft investigation for a minimum of 5 years (3 for sworn law enforcement officer) and have experience against a set of pre-determined criteria.

The candidate must be a current IAATI member and be focused on actively developing their professional development. They must have a broad application of investigative management and be able to demonstrate flexibility in application.

To align IAATI's program with other “certified practicing” programs such as Certified Practicing Accountant, Certified Practicing Engineer and Certified Practicing Auditor, the applicant must first hold relevant vocational qualifications atthe applicable level.

If this sounds like you, then you are ready to take the next step…..please read on.

IAATI has secured the services of an independent assessment body to review applications against the competencies it has determined. The assessment body, Maurice J. Kerrigan & Associates, is a Registered Training Organisation.

Standards are required to be met in the areas of:

  • membership,
  • experience,

You will be required to make a short statement in support of your claimed distinction in each criterion, and attach any supporting evidence, where applicable.
