Some children will have also:
  1. Made a bird feeder.
  2. Made a paper plate bird.

Ongoing formative assessment will be facilitated through discussions and by sharing pupils’ own prior experiences.Observations of language used by children and the links they make to their own experiences and actions.

Introduction: / Today we are going to be learning about birds.
Ask the children if they have seen any birds. Where did they see them? What did they look like? Do they know the names of them?

Activities: / Teacher led
Take children outdoors for 1 hour to take part in Big Schools Birdwatch and record the different birds that you see.

/ Key Questions: What can you see? What can you hear? What is the same? What is different?
Plenary: / Bring children back together. Can they remember which birds they saw? How did they know which birds they were? Show the BSBW Early years resource cards to confirm what the children have seen.
What makes the birds come to your school/nursery? What could you do to your outside space to encourage more birds to come and to make sure they have what they need?
Submit your results online to help the RSPB monitor which birds are visiting schools and nurseries. / Key Vocabulary: Vocabulary relating to colours.
