BROWNSVILLE-MATAMOROS

Binational Health Council (BHC)

The BHC Brownsville-Matamoros started its operation in the beginning of the 1960s and meets regularly to discuss local binational health issues, develop and implement joint actions.

Presently it is composed by the City of Brownsville Health Department; the Cameron County Health & Human Services Department; the Office of Border Health, Department of State Health Services, Region 11; the Mexican Consulate; the University of Texas - Houston School of Public Health, Brownsville Regional Campus; the Brownsville Community Health Clinic; the Health Jurisdiction III of the Secretaría de Salud de Tamaulipas (SSA); the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE), and the National Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT) .

Vision

To have the Brownsville-Matamoros sister cities collaborate in public health issues that benefit the region.

Mission

Positively impact the living conditions of the people of the Brownsville-Matamoros region by improving the quality of life through health promotion, health education, and disease prevention.

Priorities

The strategic plan exercise developed during the spring of 2008 and presented at the Binational Health Councils Strategic Planning Workshop of July 25, 2008 in San Antonio, Texas identified the following priority areas:

1.  Obesity

2.  Diabetes

3.  Dengue

4.  Teen Pregnancy

5.  HIV
