This schedule is incomplete: It includes most major due dates, but not all the daily activities. Each essay assignment sheet will contain more details, and in-class daily work may come up unnanounced.

Week 1 Mon 4/6: Introduction to the class and each other.

Tue 4/7: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 1, “Thinking Well,” and Chapter 8, “Superstitions.”

Wed 4/8: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 14, “Quoting.” Lecture on how to integrate

quotations into your writing. Begin Essay #1

(Personal Narrative)

Thu 4/9: Write the “Generating Material for Essay #1” assignment. I am out of town for a

conference today, so there is no class meeting.

Fri 4/10: Due: Seminar paper on “The Fourth of July,” by Audre Lorde, pages 254-

258, and “Feet in Smoke,” by John Jeremiah Sullivan, pages 399-406 in 50

Essays. Kennan Knudsen will be your instructor today while I am at the

conference.

Week 2 Mon 4/13: Due in class: “Generating Material for Essay #1.” We will work with it in class.

Tue 4/14: Due: Read Trimble Chapters 2 and 3, “Getting Launched” and “Openers.”

In-class exercises based on these chapters.

Wed 4/15: More about the thesis and organization of Essay #1

Thu 4/16: Thesis and organization, continued.

Fri 4/17: Due: Seminar paper on “Joyas Voladores,” pages 125-128, and “Once More to

the Lake,” by E.B. White, pages 431-437 in 50 Essays.

Week 3 Mon 4/20: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 4, “Middles.” In-class exercises.

Tue 4/21: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 5, “Closers.” In-class exercises.

Wed 4/22: Grammar lesson and practice: Comma splices and semi-colons.

Thu 4/23: Due: Essay #1 (Narrative) in Workshop groups. Bring 3 copies.

Fri 4/24: Quiz on comma splices and semi-colons. Bring Trimble for more work with

punctuation.

Week 4 Mon 4/27: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 13, “Punctuation.” Exercises with the

material from this chapter.

Tue 4/28: Due: Essay #1 (Narrative). Begin Essay #2 (Review).

Wed 4/29: Practice sample worksheets.

Thu 4/30: Due: Worksheet for Essay #2.

Fri 5/1: Introduction to ethos, pathos, and logos. Bring 50 Essays.

Week 5 Mon 5/4: Due: Seminar paper due on “Our Vanishing Night,” by Verlyn Klinkenborg, pp

240-243, and “The Ugly Tourist,” by Jamaica Kincaid, pp 199-202.

Fri 5/29: Quiz on the grammar topic of last Wednesday. Last day to withdraw.

Week 9 Mon 6/1: Due: Seminar paper on “The Death of the Moth,” by Virginia Woolf, available

online, links to be provided.

Tue 6/2: In-class sentence analysis and imitation practice.

Wed 6/3: Due: Imitation worksheet.

Fri 6/5: Due: Essay #4 (Analysis) in Workshop groups. Bring three copies. This does not

include the Introduction, just the Imitation.

Week 10 Mon 6/8: In-class writing on the Introduction to Essay #4. Bring your essay as it is so far

and the text of the essay you are imitating, and be prepared to write.

Tue 6/9: Due: Essay #4. Introduction to “Allegory of the Cave.”

Wed 6/10: In-class work with Allegory.

Thu 6/11: Seminar paper due on “Allegory of the Cave,” by Plato, pages 303-311, in

50 Essays. In-class writing and discussion.

Fri 6/12: Optional revision due today. If you are revising, you will have

discussed your revision plan with me long before this date.
