Frank D. Byrne, MD MMM CPE FACPE FACHE

Frank D. Byrne became president of St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison, WI inJuly 2004. St. Mary’s is a 440 bed tertiary care facility that is part of SSM Health Care, one of the largest Catholic health care systems in the country. Based in St. Louis, MO, SSM Health Care was the first health care winner of the Malcolm Baldrige Award in 2002. Also in 2002, St. Mary’s achieved Magnet Designation for Nursing Excellence from the AmericanNursingCredentialingCenter. St. Mary’s enjoys a unique, multi-faceted partnership with the physicians of Dean Health System, and serves as host to the University of Wisconsin Family Medicine Residency.

Frank served as Parkview Health Executive Vice President and President, Parkview Health Foundations from 2002 until 2004. His duties included oversight of research, public policy and government relations, community relations and outreach, and grant making and fundraising. From 1995 to 2002, Dr. Byrne served as President of Parkview Hospital, a 550 bed tertiary care facility in Ft. Wayne, IN. Previously, Dr. Byrne served in a varietyof clinical, administrative and governance leadership roles at Parkview, including medical staff president, medical director, and board member of ParkviewHospital. He practiced pulmonary and critical care medicine from 1982 to 1994. Frank is active in a number of professional organizations, including the AmericanCollege of Physician Executives, which he serves as board member,the AmericanCollege of Healthcare Executives, and the American Hospital Association which he served as a Regional Policy Board member from 2000-2004.

Frank also has experience in corporate governance. He serves as member of the board and board audit committee of Lincare Holdings, a publicly traded (NASDAQ) oxygen and medical equipment company, and on the board of Steel Dynamics, Inc. He served on the board and board audit committee of Amerinet Central, a regional healthcare group purchasing cooperative headquartered in Warrendale, PA, from 2000-2005.

Dr. Byrne holds a BS from the University of Notre Dame, an MD from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, and a Masters in Medical Management from CarnegieMellonUniversity. He also attended the University of Michigan Business School Executive Program. He completed his clinical training in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease at IndianaUniversityMedicalCenter. He holds an appointment as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, and formerly served as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine Fort Wayne Center for Medical Education.
