NOTES ON DISPLACEMENT AND DEADWEIGHT TABLES:

1.The displacement and its corresponding deadweight in salt water (S.G. 1.025 T/M3) is given on Chapter XV of HYDROSTATIC PARTICULARS, at intervals of 10 mm from light to loaded draught, thus enabling the values at intermediate draughts to be quickly and accurately obtained.

2.If it should be necessary to obtain the deadweight in water of specific gravity other than 1.025 T/M3, the following procedure should be used:

· From the Table of HYDROSTATIC PARTICULARS obtain the salt water displacement at the mean draught required.

· Divide this displacement by 1.025 T/M3, then multiply by the actual specific gravity of the water in which the ship is floating.

· From this displacement deduct the lightweight of the ship (3638.6 T); this gives the deadweight at the draught and specific gravity of water required.

EXAMPLE:

Deadweight, DW, required at 7.583 M mean draught, in fresh water.

· From Chapter XV, salt water displacement, D at 7.583 M draft is:

•D = 11393.0 + (11410.3 - 11393.0) * 3/10 = 11398.2 T

•Displacement in fresh water, Df:

•Df = 11398.2/1.025 = 11120.2 T

· Deadweight, DW at 7.583 M mean draught in fresh water

•DW= 11120.2-3638.6 = 7481.6 T

In this chapter is shown the difference between a displacement ( D1) of the ship with some trim and a displacement ( D) of the vessel afloat on even keel with the same mean draught.

Correction value = D - D

D1 - Displacement of the vessel with trim

D - Displacement of the vessel afloat on even keel

Trim is the difference between draughts at fore and aft perpendiculars.

EXAMPLE:

Suppose the ship is afloat in sea water (S.G. = 1.025 T/M3), with the following draughts on perpendiculars:

· Fore draught=5.0 M

· Aft draught=7.0 M

•Mean draught=(5.0+ 7.0)/2 = 6.0 M

•Trim=7.0-5.0 = 2.0 M

From Chapter XV - HYDROSTATIC PARTICULARS, displacement corresponding to mean draught 6.0 M

D = 8693.5 T

From table of displacement correction, the correction of displacement corresponding to sea water specific gravity of 1.000 T/M3, is:

•CD = -46T

Correction of displacement corresponding to sea water specific gravity of 1.025 T/M3 is:

C = 1.025 * CD = 1.025 *(-46) = - 47.2

Displacement D1for trim 2.0 M (by stern)

D1 = 8693.5-(-47.2) = 8740.7 T
