RE 3030 (Trathen)

Assessment Assignment (Short Instructions)

(a.1) Spelling Assessment (Whole Class—4th or 5th Grade, maybe 2nd or 3rd)

1. Work with a partner (or partners) and administer the spelling assessment.

4th grade: read list 2, list 3, list 4. Read each word, use in sentence, repeat word.

5th grade: read list 2, list 3, list 4, list 5. Read each word, use in sentence, repeat word.

2nd grade: read list 1, list 2, list 3. Read each word, use in sentence, repeat word.

3rd grade: read list 1, list 2, list 3. Read each word, use in sentence, repeat word.

2. Score each child’s test. Score right or wrong, marking each error. Follow the instructions for scoring on the handout.

3. Interpret the results by indicating instructional level for children. Scores below 33 % are frustrational, 33 % is borderline (look at quality of errors), 42 % to 83 % is instructional, above 83 % is independent level. Place names of students on instructional level lists—download form from class Web page and type in names and scores then save this document to be submitted to TaskStream.

4. Show the results to your classroom teacher and ask her about the rankings and how they correspond to students’ reading levels. That is, are the low spellers, the low readers, high spellers, high readers, and so on.

5. Write a brief discussion of your findings for the class—summarize the range and levels and how these scores compare to your teacher’s thoughts about reading level. Where you surprised by the range, what is your general impression of the class? Do you have any recommendations for instruction of these students? Use the downloaded form from the class Web page to type in your summary and response. This then is submitted to TaskStream.

(a.2) WRI Assessment for a child in spelling assessment and an additional student in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade.

This assessment is completed individually with one child.

(b) ERSI Assessment for a kindergarten or 1st grade student.

This assessment is completed individually with one child.

Follow the instructions for both of these assessments.

Use summary sheets on the class Web page to summarize findings. You will download the summary sheet and type your response and scores and interpretation on it and then submit this to TaskStream.

YOU WILL HAVE THREE DOCUMENTS THAT YOU SUBMIT TO TASKSTREAM.

(Determining short form accuracy scores: From the number of errors on a list, find the percent off in the table above and subtract that number from 100. Scores below 33% are an indication of frustration. Examine error quality among borderline frustration lists to confirm or adjust instructional level.)
