Guidelines & Selection Process

National Student Employment Week Second full week of April.

Eligible Student Employment Supervisor
In order to be eligible for consideration, student employees must have worked a minimum of6 months part-time (or three months full-time), during the selection period which is from June inthe prior year through May of the current year.

Selection Criteria

Supervisors may nominate student employees whom they feel warrant particular recognition fortheir performance on the job. The Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) Recognition Programbegins at the institutional level and moves on to regional, and, in some cases, nationalrecognition.Nominations will be judged on the followingcharacteristics: reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, and the uniqueness of thestudent’s contribution to the employer.

Nominations:

The student employee must be eligible based on the guidelines established by the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators (MASEA) and the National Student Employment Association (NSEA).

The nomination will consist of:

  1. a completed nomination form (It is critical that the nomination form be as descriptive as possible as it is the only criteria utilized by the regional and national organization to determine state, regional and national winners.)

Nominations will be judged on the following characteristics: reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, and the uniqueness of the student’s contribution to the employer

  • Attributes – Provide an example that demonstrates the nominees’ greatest attributes and how these attributes enhance their contributions to the position.
  • Expectations – Provide an example of how the nominee goes above and beyond the expectations listed in their job description.
  • Leadership/Style – Leadership - Provide an example of how the nominee’s leadership skills, initiative or style helped to improve how your office functions. Style – Describe the quality of the nominee’s work style and how their style of work is well suited for your department.
  • Impact – Provide an example of the positive impact the nominee has had to your department, campus or community.
  1. a completed reference form (listing two references)
  2. one letter of recommendation completed by a colleague or individual who may interact with the nominee

Nomination Deadline:

All nominations must be received by the second Friday of February. A nominee will only be considered if all criteria, as stated above, are completed by the deadline.

Review of Nominations:

A panel will be selected to serve as readers of all nominations. The readers cannot be a nominator or a member of the department of a nominee. Each panel member will review all nominations and letters of recommendation and rate each nominee on the three areas of criteria (Mentoring, Professionalism and Leadership).

Nominee Interviews:

The top nominees, based on the reader ratings, will then be interviewed by a panel of judges. The judges cannot be a nominator or a member of the department of a nominee. The judges will conduct formal interviews and recommend the Northwest Student Employee of the Year.

Award Recipient:

All award recipients’ will be announced at the Northwest Awards & Recognition Ceremony on the first Monday of April in the Student Union Ballroom. Ceremony details will be announced at a later date.
