Course Description: This is a year course where students will earn one-half credit per semester.

Students enrolled in the Leadership class are will be working together with their fellow officers as well as their class/student activities advisor to develop, plan, implement and evaluate the co-curricular program at Kamehameha. These activities may include social activities, spirit activities, service learning projects, involvement in the legislative process and other leadership activities. In accepting a leadership role as a class or student body officer students understand that they are committing to be involved beyond the normal school days. As elected representatives students have an obligation and responsibility to follow through on commitments and take initiative to insure a successful student activities program.

Course Goals & Objectives: Students will…

  • model characteristics of an ideal Kamehameha Schools student
  • learn and understand how to plan a purposeful school event
  • develop communication skills in both large and small group settings
  • how to effect change through proper channels for the betterment of the school
  • learn and become proficient at inclusive decision making
  • understand their role as representatives of a larger group
  • learn to communicate properly with various personnel on and off campus

Communication: Communication is vital in this class. It is each student’s responsibility to communicate with each other and with your instructor.

Grading Procedures:Every student has the opportunity to earn an “A” in this class. Half of your grade will be given by the class instructor and half of the grade by the class/student activities advisor. Grades will be issued based on a point/percentage system. Each assignment will be given a point value. Assignments that require more effort will have a higher point value. At the end of the quarter and semester pointsearned will be tallied and divided by the total possible points. Grades will be given out based on the following scale:

C+ / 77-79%
C / 73-76%
C- / 70-72%
D+ / 67-69%
D / 63-66%
D- / 60-62%
F / Below 60%

Deadlines: As a student leader you must understand the importance of meeting deadlines. Failure to meet a deadline in this class will result in a zero. This means that someone else had to cover on a student’s behalf or that an event did not take place.

Attendance: Regular attendance is important in order to be a successful student. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to notify your advisor/instructor of your absence before hand. Excessive absences at scheduled meetings and functions will negatively affect a student’s grade in this class.School policy on make up work applies. You are responsible to find out what work was missed and to make up assignments.

While it is understandable that students are involved in other activities outside of student government, they have committed to taking on the responsibility of leading their class or school and have been elected by their peers.

  • Follow the rules and guidelines in the Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus High School Student/Parent Handbook 2014-2015.
  • As a class, we will develop our working agreements which will function as our classroom rules.
