Speakers of the 40th Governor’s Conference on Energy & the Environment:

Jim Stanway has spent his career working for major energy companies and major energy users. While at Facebook and Walmart, he developed renewable energy procurement strategies. Additionally while at Walmart, he proposed, developed and was responsible for Walmart’s greenhouse gas strategy, including the largest supply chain carbon reduction goal to date. This involved business and product development activities aimed at profitable greenhouse gas measures for customers and the supply chain. Additionally, he managed teams that install renewable power projects at stores and distribution centers. He has 26 years of energy industry experience including five years with a deregulated power marketing company, three years with a regulated investor-owned utility and the balance with Walmart stores managing energy procurement, conservation, business planning and strategy in all 50 states and internationally. While at Facebook he participated in the site selection process for locating new data centers around the word. These facilities are both a major investment and are major energy consumers. He has testified before the U.S. Senate and appeared at U.S. Congressional panels regarding energy, climate change and national security. Mr. Stanway has an Economics degree from Bellarmine University, Louisville, Ky. He also frequently lectures at the University of Louisville regarding corporate sustainability and energy.

John D. Gagel, CIH

Global Senior Manager Corporate Sustainability

Lexmark International, Inc.

John D. Gagel is the global senior manager of corporate sustainability for Lexmark International, Inc. He is responsible for corporate management of all global sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and strategy development as well as product safety compliance.

Gagel has been with Lexmark for 17 years and has served in his current position since 2007.

He is responsible for the development and release of Lexmark’s annual CSR report; and is the corporate senior manager for environmental, health and safety, responsible for Lexmark operations globally. In addition, he provides customer-focused sales and marketing support for all Lexmark sustainability initiatives worldwide, and has spoken at numerous conferences and seminars about the importance of sustainability as a key business strategy.

Gagel is the Lexmark representative to the Manufacturing Executive Leadership Council Board of Governors and the University of Kentucky, College of Engineering Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing.

He has more than 23 years of experience in the sustainability, environmental, health and safety field. Prior to joining Lexmark, he served as a consultant to Fortune 500 companies in varied manufacturing settings on environmental, health and safety-related issues.

Gagel is certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Fredonia.


Nick D’Andrea, Vice President, UPS Public Affairs

As vice president of UPS Public Affairs, Nick D’Andrea has responsibility for public policy that affects all UPS entities in Kentucky, including UPS Airlines and Worldport, as well as Delaware, Maryland, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. He also advocates for issues related to UPS’s alternative fuels and sustainability strategy.

Nick joined UPS in 2013, bringing a wealth of experience in government relations and public affairs to his role. He previously served as Assistant Director of Governmental Affairs for the University of Louisville, where he helped formulate the legislative agenda for the university. Nick also worked as Director of Government Affairs for the state’s Passport Health Plan, where he directed government relations, communications and media relations, focusing on brand and image.

Nick has also worked with the American Diabetes Association, Kentucky Representative Anne Northup and the Louisville Metro Council.

A native of Richwood, Ky., Nick holds a bachelor’s degree in political science with a concentration in law and public policy, and a Master’s in Business Administration, both from the University of Louisville.

Nick serves on the board of directors for the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Brightside Louisville, and Ronald McDonald House Charities Kentuckiana.

Jayson McDonald is an Energy Manager for the Kentucky Army National Guard and the Department of Military Affairs. After moving over from the Division for Air Quality in 2012, he worked with the Environmental Office managing the Air and Water Quality Programs before taking on energy management in 2014. Jayson has since managed several energy conservation projects including the installation of photovoltaic systems, integrating sustainable designs through innovative techniques, and implemented building envelope improvements through retro-commissioning to National Guard facilities statewide. He is currently serving in the National Guard as the Company Commander of the 130th Engineer Support Company stationed out of Madisonville and Greenville, KY. He has deployed to Afghanistan as an advisor to the Afghan National Army in infrastructure transition as well as base operations and maintenance. Received his B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from the Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in 2009 and has both his Energy Manager in Training (EMIT) and Engineer in Training (EIT) certifications.

Carolyn M. Brown, Partner, Dinsmore & Shohl LLP
Carolyn Brown is a partner with Dinsmore & Shohl LLP and chairs the firm’s Environmental Practice Group. Her practice focuses on all areas of environmental law and includes counseling on regulatory requirements, permitting and transactional issues as well as environmental litigation. She received her B.S. from the University of Kentucky in 1979 and her J.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1982. She recently completed her term on the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and continues to serve on the Chamber’s Energy and Environment Policy Council. She previously chaired the Energy, Environment and Resources Law Section of the Kentucky Bar Association and has served on the Commerce Lexington Public Policy Council. She is a fellow in the American College of Environmental Lawyers and serves on the Executive Committee. Carolyn is resident in the firm’s Lexington office.

Kevin M. Butt, General Manager

Regional Environmental Sustainability Director

Toyota Motor North America, Inc.

Mr. Kevin Butt is the Regional Environmental Sustainability Director of Toyota’s North American Environmental Sustainability Programs. He is responsible for the development of Environmental Sustainability Programs and Regulatory/Legislative development for all of Toyota’s North American operations.

Prior to Mr. Butt’s current assignment he was the General Manger/Chief Environmental and Safety Officer for Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing for all of Toyota’s Manufacturing operations. Prior to that assignment Mr. Butt was the Assistant General Manager of Body Production Engineering for Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc., (TMMNA). He is responsible for Body Engineering for all Toyota’s North American manufacturing operations. Body Engineering consists of Welding, Stamping, and Painting Operations.

Mr. Butt serves on several boards including the National Wildlife Habitat Council, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Foundation, World Wildlife Fund National Council, North American Great Plains Advisory Board and the Yellowstone Park Foundation Board.

Mr. Butt has a Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Science from Georgetown College.

Andrew L. Ott is the president and CEO of PJM Interconnection, the largest power grid in North America and the largest electricity market in the world.

Mr. Ott, who has been with PJM for more than 18 years, was previously responsible for executive oversight of PJM Market Operations, Market Strategy, Member Training, State Relations, Customer Relations and Performance Compliance. In that role, he was responsible for implementation of the PJM wholesale electricity markets including Locational Marginal Pricing, Financial Transmission Rights, Day-Ahead Energy Market and Capacity Market systems. He also serves as a board member for PJM Technologies and PJM Environmental Information Services.

Mr. Ott has extensive experience in energy market restructuring, including electricity market design and implementation issues, and in power-system engineering applications. Mr. Ott serves on the board of directors of the Association of Power Exchanges. He serves as Chair of CIGRE (International Council on Large Electric Systems) Study Committee C5, on Electricity Markets and Regulation.

Prior to joining PJM, Mr. Ott was employed by GPU, Inc. for 13 years in transmission planning and operations.

Mr. Ott received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Science in applied statistics from Villanova University. Mr. Ott is an IEEE Fellow.

Kiran Bhatraju is the Founder and CEO of Arcadia Power, a nationwide renewable energy company. Arcadia Power's software platform gives utility customers in all 50 states access to a green power program, community solar, and on-bill financing of energy-efficient products. Bhatraju was previously a Founder of American Efficient which sold energy-efficiency on forward capacity markets, worked as a legislative aide on Capitol Hill for John Yarmuth (KY-3), and sits on the board of the Environmental Voter Project. He is a native of Pikeville, KY, and a proud Kentucky Colonel.

Government and Community Affairs

Duke Energy Kentucky

Chuck Session serves as Vice President of Government and Community Affairs for Duke Energy. He is responsible for leading local and state government affairs in Kentucky, as well as the local community relations efforts with the company’s key stakeholders in Northern Kentucky. In addition, he has responsibility to direct Duke Energy's regional economic development activities for both Ohio and Kentucky to enhance the performance of the company’s natural gas and electric operations.

Chuck has worked for Duke Energy and its predecessor companies for 35 years. Early in

Chuck's career, he was a district manager responsible for customer service and transmission and distribution operations, and later promoted to northern area manager, where he was responsible for customer service, community relations and regulatory affairs for the company. He also served as a manager in Duke Energy’s Meter Reading department, where he was responsible for the reading of 1.4 million natural gas and electric meters for customers in Ohio and Kentucky.

Before relocating to Northern Kentucky, Chuck worked in Charlotte, N.C., where he was the Director of the Lab Services team responsible for meter testing, rubber goods and small tool repair across all six of Duke Energy's regulated jurisdictions. A native of Clinton, Indiana, Chuck earned a Business Degree from Brevard College in Brevard, N.C. and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from

MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill. Chuck currently serves on the Greater Cincinnati United Way and the Kentucky State Chamber Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Leadership Kentucky 2016 class.

In his spare time, Chuck enjoys traveling, spending time with his family and volunteering in the community. Chuck and his wife Maida have one daughter.

Chris Woolery, How$martKY Program Coordinator,

Chris Woolery became the How$martKY™ Program Coordinator in September of 2015 after four years with MACED as a Residential Energy Specialist. How$martKY™ partners with rural electric cooperatives to design, finance, and install home energy efficiency upgrades – and these improvements are paid for directly out of energy savings on utility bills. As a former ENERGY STAR® builder and energy services contractor, Chris has been a pioneer in efficient construction and remodeling in Central Kentucky for over a decade. Having built 21 ENERGY STAR® homes and implemented energy upgrades to over 700 households, he has learned which energy upgrades make the best investments. When he's not being an energy nerd, Chris lives in Lexington with his wife and kids, and enjoys many of the things that Kentucky is noted for: bourbon, basketball, and especially our beautiful natural spaces.

R. Clay Larkin, Partner

Dinsmore & Shohl LLP

Mr. Larkin is an attorney with Dinsmore & Shohl in the Lexington office of where he is a member of the firm's Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Practice Group. A significant amount of his practice is devoted to representing clients in the coal, oil & gas, and electric generating industries. He represents clients in environmental litigation and compliance counseling matters under SMCRA, the Clean Water Act, and other environmental statutes. He also serves as Senior Policy Advisor and Secretary of the Kentucky Coal Association. He is Trustee and member of the Executive Committee of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation, and serves as Secretary and member of the Executive Committee of the Fayette County Local Emergency Planning Committee.

Bill Bissett is the President of the Kentucky Coal Association. He was previously employed as the Chief of Staff & Senior Vice President for Communications of Marshall University, located in Huntington, West Virginia. Prior to working for his Alma Mater, Bissett served as Vice President of Public Relations for Charles Ryan Associates (CRA), an integrated marketing firm in Charleston, WV. During his tenure at CRA, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Friends of Coal campaign. A native of West Virginia, Bissett earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Marshall University, in addition to receiving his commission in the United States Army.

Pete Goodmann has worked for the Department for Environmental Protection since 1993, including 13 years as a manager in the Division of Water prior to being appointed Assistant Director in 2008. In February, 2014 Mr. Goodmann was appointed the Director of the Division of Water. He is responsible for overseeing Kentucky’s water regulatory programs, including the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act programs and the water resources programs, including the Dam Safety program, Stream Construction/Floodplain permitting, NFIP, and the Risk Map program, drought management, as well as the Agriculture Water Quality Act. Peter earned his B.S. in Geology from the University of Iowa (1984), his M.A. in Geology from Temple University (1986), and conducted other post-graduate work at the University of Kentucky, where he was a Chevron Fellow.

R. Bruce Scott is a 33 year career employee of the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet and has served as the Deputy Secretary of the Cabinet since June 2016. Bruce began work with the Cabinet in 1983, as an environmental engineer in the Division of Water. During his career with the Cabinet, Bruce was manager of the KPDES Branch from 1994 to 2004, as Director of the Division of Waste Management (DWM) from 2004 to 2008, and as Commissioner of the Department for Environmental Protection (DEP) from January 2008 to June 2016. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Kentucky and is a registered professional engineer.
