REFUGEE FUNDRAISING UPDATE:

The Syrian Fundraising Dinner at St. Dominic's high school last weekend was a resounding success. Congratulations are in order to Maria Vandenberg and her students and to the organizers as well. Thanks to this event, and the Bridge Tournament in mid-March, plus the many individual donations, this parish has far surpassed its financial commitment to the refugee resettlement project. Therefore, we do not anticipate asking for further monetary support for this effort, but we may need practical, hands-on help in the future, particularly after the refugee families finally arrive. Many thanks to all who helped organize and to those who contributed. Well done!

SACRED TRADITION

Sacred Tradition is the Church’s lived understanding of the deposit of faith, handed on faithfully and completely from one generation of Christians to the next. Catholics believe in a given Tradition today as it was believed in the early Church. When we talk about Tradition we talk about Apostolic Traditions (capital T) not human traditions (small t). Apostolic Traditions are the deposit of divine truths that Jesus orally entrusted to the Apostles. St. Jude said, “The faith once and for all handed down to the saints.”

The characteristic of Tradition shows us that indeed Christ has been true to His promise that He would send the Holy Spirit to guide the Church into all truth (John 16: 12-13) and He Himself would be with His Church “even until the end of the world.”(Matthew 28:20) This is why the Catholic Church can speak with a confidence and an authority that is not, ultimately her own: it’s Christ’s own authority that she speaks with. Just as He said, “Whoever listens to you, listens to Me. And whoever rejects you rejects Me.” (Luke 10:16; Matthew 16:18-19, 18:18)

St. Paul himself explains that he, as a member of the magisterium of the infant Church, had the obligation of making sure the Church understood the message in accordance with the way in which He had intend it to be understood. “Now I would remind you brethren, in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved if you hold it fast….unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures…. .” (1Cor.15: 1-3 RSV)

1. HOLD IT FAST – meaning you are not permitted to neglect or dispense with this oral teaching.

2. St. Paul reminds his readers that he too “received” this oral teaching first then handed it onto them (which is the precise meaning of Tradition: receiving it, handing it on.

3. It is the role of the magisterium (Latin: teaching office; represented here by St. Paul, one of the Church’s first bishops and doctors to explain the meaning of scripture and faithfully deliver the message to the faithful. St. Paul commands the Thessalonians to keep the Apostolic Traditions, “So then brethren, stand firm and hold to the Traditions which you were taught by either by word of mouth or by letter.” (2 Thess.2:15)

Tradition works in the Church along side and never in competition with Sacred Scripture.
