What is the issue?

UK households waste £12.5 billion worth good food and drink each year, costing the average family with children £700 a year, or around £60 a month. Most of this food and drink waste could have been avoided if only we’d eaten it in time, or knew how much food to prepare and what we could do with our leftovers.

Why does food waste matter?

Wasting food and drink is a waste of money. It is also an unnecessary waste of energy and natural resources which went into the production, storage, preparation, packaging and transportation of that food. If we could stop throwing good food away, we could save the equivalent carbon emissions as taking 1 in 4 cars off UK roads.

Love Food Hate Waste is a national initiative to try and address this issue. It offers practical tips about a range of food-saving measures, from planning to food portioning, and from betterfood storage to using up leftovers. How can we help you?

If you would like to get involved, we offer training sessions for a range of organisations including local authorities, businesses and community groups, who wish to take an active rolein reducing food waste. The incentive for this might be to help your staff/group members/volunteers/local community reduce their food waste,or to assist your customersin saving money on food that might otherwise have been thrown away, or alternatively to contribute towards your organisation’s corporate social responsibility.

The training covers the background to, and issues around, food waste; the key behaviours to help reduce food waste and support on engaging with others/passing the messages on. The training session lasts approximately 3.5 hours, but there is flexibility in this, which your Local Partnership Adviser is happy to discuss with you to ensure it meets your needs. It is designed to be fun and interactive and includes practical activities.
