How will I be assessed?

Your trainer or supervisor will decide with you how you will be assessed. Your assessment activity may include completion of the student worksheet and practical task selected by your trainer or supervisor. Your assessment should allow you to demonstrate all the skills and knowledge required to maintain and test fire hydrant and hose reel installations.

This unit may be assessed in conjunction with other units of competence. Your trainer or supervisor will tell you if you are to be assessed this way.

Are there any pre-requisites?

Prior to commencing CPCPFS3038A – test and maintain fire hydrant and hose reel installations you must have successfully completed the following pre-requisite:

·  CPCPCM2043A - Carry out WHS requirements.

It is also recommended that prior to commencing CPCPFS3038A – Test and maintain fire hydrant and hose reel installations you should have successfully completed the following competencies:

·  CPCPCM2052A Weld using oxy-acetylene equipment.

·  CPCPCM2053A Weld using manual metal arc welding equipment.

Project work may also group pre-requisite and or co-requisite competencies together to carry out such projects. It is recommended that the following competencies are grouped with this unit of competency:

·  CPCPFS3032A – Install distribution and range pipes

·  CPCPFS3033A – Fit-off sprinkler heads, controls and ancillary equipment

·  CPCPFS3034A – Install control valve assemblies, actuating devices and local alarms

·  CPCPFS3035A – Test fire protection systems for pressure

·  CPCPFS3037A – Install domestic and residential life safety sprinkler systems.

What other resources will I need?

To assist you the following resources have been suggested and should be available to you to do this competency:

Texts

·  AS2118 Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems.

·  AS2419 Fire Hydrant Installations.

Safety

Workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements need to be observed in accordance with legislation. You need to know the WHS laws governing your job. Revision of CPCPCM2043A - Carry out OH & S requirements, before commencing this unit is advisable.

In any work situation you can reduce the risk of injury to yourself and others by using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). The types of PPE that you will need include:

·  overalls – used for the protection of the installer when working in different conditions

·  boots – it is recommended that soft soled footwear is worn while working on roofs, as deep grooved footwear pick up small stones and debris that might damage or scratch the roof sheets

·  safety glasses or goggles to protect the eyes from injury when cutting the sheets with a power saw

·  ear plugs or muffs to protect the installer’s hearing from excessive noise

·  dust masks or respirators to protect the user from breathing in dust or fine particles when cutting the sheets with a power saw

·  gloves, for the protection of the installer’s hands when working with different types of pipes, tools and equipment.

Workplace environment and safety

Handling of materials / Manual lifting and handling techniques must always be followed according to WHS requirements. You should move materials into position by hand where possible. Excessive manual handling should be avoided and cranes and other mechanical lifting devices should be employed when necessary.
Limited height scaffolds and elevating work platforms (EWP) / Operators must ensure they are familiar with all operating procedures detailed by manufacturers in the elevated working platforms operators’ manual. Personal protective equipment must be worn at all times by the person working in the basket of the EWP. This consists of safety harnesses, safety helmets, rubber soled shoes, safety vests and suitable clothing.

Introduction

In this unit you will look at the maintenance and testing of fire hydrant and hose reel installations in the full range of commercial and domestic situations.

Fire protection systems are installed to provide continuous protection from fire for the life of the system. With good management and good luck the installed system may never be used to extinguish or control a fire but it must be in a continuous state of readiness. Hydrant and hose reel systems are a combination of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic components that require constant monitoring and maintenance to ensure that the system is always ready to function in an emergency.

One way to ensure a system is in running order is to operate the system at regular intervals. With a hydrant and hose reel system this may be possible but it may also cause damage or interference to the property and people it is there to protect.

A second way is to check individual components and separate zones of the installation at regular intervals. This way no total system is out of action at any time and temporary interruptions can be quickly reinstated in an emergency. This second method is the normal approach taken with hydrant and hose reel systems and a procedure for regular maintenance is set out in AS1851 Maintenance of fire protection equipment, Part 2 Fire hose reels and Part 4 Fire hydrant installations.

Not all components in the system need to be checked at the same time. The alarm or fuel for pump motors, for example, need frequent regular checks, whereas the installed pipe work and hydrants are on a longer maintenance cycle. To complicate matters every office block, warehouse or home has a different system. To accommodate the varying needs of each system a program is customised for each installation. The maintenance program for each installation will include regular checks and maintenance at weekly, monthly, yearly and at longer intervals as specified in the maintenance contract.

Before you can maintain and test hydrant and hose reel installations there are several issues that you must know including:

·  types of hydrant and hose reel system

·  properties of conveyed materials relating to, water pressure and flow rates

·  components of hydrant and hose reel systems
