COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed for the students to become more aware of health and wellness issues relevant to middle school students. The topics to be covered but not limited to are physical activity, nutrition, personal hygiene, environmental factors, physical attributes, safety, and overall wellness. The class objective is to educate students about overall health issues and have an understandingof the role of living a healthy lifestyles.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Be able to read and summarize health articles both orally and in writing.
  2. Be able to research information on health topics.
  3. Active participation in groups
  4. Be able to describe the implementation of activities.
  5. Actively participate in outdoor or gym activities.
  6. Develop methods for making healthy choices.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATION (Grades):

GRADING:

All assignments are given a total number of points. Grades are based on the following categories:

- Daily Work (class work and notebook.)

- Quizzes

- Exams

- Projects

- Participation

- Extra Credit

*Individual extra credit will not be given at any time.

If extra credit is available, it will be available to the entire class.

Also, the following are PROHIBITED (Noted in the student handbook):

-The USE of cell phones or other personal electronic devices is prohibited inside any building during regular school hours without academic need and teacher permission. Use of any of these devices will be confiscated and turn into the officefor students to retrieve after school.

-Eating or drinking. (Only permitted for class assignment.)

-Wearing hat, hoodie, or sunglasses.

CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATION OF THESE RULES:

Consequences for not following these rules may include any of the following:

1st Offense: VERBAL WARNING

2nd Offense: REASSIGN SEAT

3rd Offense: PHONE CALL TO PARENTS.

4th Offense: **REFERRAL TO THE PRINICPAL’S OFFICE.

*Depending on the severity of the offense, I have discretion to choose any level of consequence deemed necessary for a student.

**In addition to each consequence, students will be required to complete a behavioral log for each offense. When a student has 3 (three) log sheets completed, a REFERRAL will be sent to the office to Mrs. Felan, principal.

USE OF TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT: Stratford School District is pleased to make available to students access to interconnected computer systems within the district and to the Internet, the worldwide network that provides various means of accessing significant educational materials and opportunities.

Students will follow all procedures and guidelines for appropriate use of technology equipment in compliance with the Student Handbook and Student Technology Guide/Agreement, page 24-30. If a student violates any of these rule(s), they will not be allowed to use the technology equipment and an alternative assignment will be provided. Also, the user/parent(s) will be responsible for any damages or repair expenses.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURE:

ENTERING THE CLASSROOM: Students will enter the classroom, quietly sit down, andbegin working on the board or warm up activity.

SHARPENING PENCILS: In order to prevent classroom disruption, students will only be allowed to sharpen their pencil at the beginning of class or with the teacher’s permission. If students come to class without a pencil, they may purchase one for 25 cents at the office.

HOMEWORK:There will be NO HOMEWORKin this class. All class work will be completed in class. Unless a student is absent, they will be provided a make-up folder for homework and will be due THE NEXT DAY for full credit, with no exceptions. If you are absent from school, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to check the MAKE–UP BIN FOR INCOMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS. Assignments will be posted in the classroom.

SEAT ASSIGNMENT: There is mandatory seat assignment throughout the year. This classroom management procedure allows for a positive learning environment for all students and keeps disruption at a minimum. However, there will be opportunities for students to work in groups.

LEAVING THE CLASSROOM: Any entry or exit from the classroom during class time must be noted on the log sheet. Students must use their time in between classes and lunch to use the restroom or get a drink of water

DISMISSAL AT THE END OF THE PERIOD: The teacher dismisses the students, not the bell. Students must remain in their seats until the teacher gives them permission to exit the classroom. In order to be dismiss from class, student must make sure that all supplies are put away in their appropriate location and all individuals are at their desk sitting quietly. Students will be dismissed at this time.

TEACHER ABSENCE: When I am absent from class, I expect the students to treat the substitute teacher withsame respect and courtesy they give me. Any student who DISRESPECTS a substitute teacher and does not abide by the classroom rules and procedures WILL be dealt with accordingly.
