First Sunday of Advent

Isaiah 2:1-5/Romans 13:11-14/Matthew 24:37-44

“You Lord, are our Father, our redeemer you are named forever. Why do you let us wander, O Lord, from your ways, and harden our hearts so that we fear you not… Would that you might meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our ways… Yet O Lord, you are our father; we are the clay and you are the potter: we are all the work of your hands.”

How many images we find in the bible to describe our God. Jesus speaks of His role as Good Shepherd, the Father as a king inviting us to a banquet, and the Holy Spirit as advocate or consoler. Those images reveal to us His identity.

Isaiah the prophet uses a different model. He portrays our God as a potter, we are the clay. The former fashions and molds us in His image and likeness. We become what He wishes us to be. If you ever watched a glass blower take simple elements with sand, place them in a hot oven, he twists, turns, heats and cools, clips and cuts, and finally a beautiful vase or animal is produced.

Advent is the time our God is taking us, molding, heating, turning and clipping us to produce what He wants. If we are honest with ourselves, and with God, we admit to wandering and sometimes indifference or hardening our hearts. During this period of prayer, escape the running and bustling, get on the right track, soften your heart like the clay and find time for the Lord to work on you making the changes necessary so He can love you even more. As we live these days of anticipation, realize that He is holding you in the palm of His hands. How comforting a way to begin the four weeks of Advent. I am held in His hand and He begins to shape me anew.
