Lamentations at 12
Assembly George Square Studios | Three
3-28 Aug, (No Shows 14,21 Aug)

Rare and unique in its presentation, and yet unequivocal in the mirroring of the moral decrepitude of man. ‘Lamentations at 12’, is an emotional, spiritual and mental aesthetic rich piece of work.

Written by Getrude Munhamo and directed by Daves Guzha, ‘Lamentations at 12’ depicts the different types of abuse that young girls face in modern day Zimbabwean society and the wars they also had to battle way back before the colonial era.

The play has received rave reviews during its tour in African countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi and Mali.

Recently, those that attended the Harare International Festival of the Arts also showered praises on it.

A combination of well scripted, immersive acting is complemented by some cool Zimbabwean musical melodies and dance moves, adding to the cultural depth of the play.

‘Lamentations at 12’ is a story the reveals how in various time periods girls have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused in society and are regarded to be of less value to their male peers.

In one of the time zones, during the days of the liberation struggle, Sekai and Jekesai are raped by one of the senior soldiers whom they trusted as they were now orphans. Sadly Sekai is murdered after being raped.

Years later, we have another innocent girl, Stella, being bedded by nine men and carrying out some arduous chores as she is paying back that clan for the sins of her brother, kuripa ngozi.

One would wish for anything else in life but not to be an orphan, forced out of school, married and playing the role of a mother ‘At 12’ – these are the lamentations of a suffering child.

The play features, Getrude Munhamo and Delma Chiwevera as the lead actresses, with Lewis Ndlovu on percussion.

“A very unique one-hour presentation that is lit up by energetic fold dances and songs…A rich element of cultural heritage” Sunday Mail
